Wolfe and John Shea.Out of town veterans of the civil war who attended the funeral were William Tarbert of Calamus, John Heckard and William Meves of Wheatland, William Wagner and Isaac Kamrar of Welton.Matthew Horan was born at Columbus, Ohio on January 4th, 1843, and died on June 30th, 1924.In April of the same year the family moved to Iowa, where has since resided.When the civil war book out he enlisted in Company D, 26th, Iowa Infantry, on August 15th, 1862, being then 19 years of age. On Sept. 13, 1862, he mustered and went at once to the front, being a member of Captain N.A. Merrell’s company for a time. He took part in the siege of Vicksburg and marched with Sherman to the Sea, besides many other battles. He was mustered out at Washington D.C. on June 6th, 1865, and returned to DeWitt.On February 19, 1903, he was married to Mrs. Ellen A. Smith, who preceded him in death four years ago.The deceased had a very large circle of friends all walks of life. He leaves one sister, Mrs. Jane Buchanan, of Cayuna, Minnesota, who with her daughter Mary were present at the funeral, one niece, Miss Margaret Buchanan, in DeWitt, and several nieces, nephew, and other relatives in Odebolt, and Denver, Colorado.Others from out of town who attended the funeral were William Horan and Mrs. Josie Stewardson of Odebolt, Miss Mary Horan of Denver, Mrs. Kate Simpson and sons, Charles and Dewey of Calamus, Mrs. E.J. Saxton and son, Herbert, of Clinton, and Atty. C.H. Murphy of Davenport.
