Matthew Miles Prine, son of Daniel S. Prine and Nancy Thrasher was born March 4, 1843, near Falmath, Rush County, Indiana, and departed this life March 10, 1920, at the age of 77 years and 6 days. The family came to Iowa in 1848 and entered the home place upon which Miles has ever since resided and which will be his last resting place. His father, mother, brother William, sister Hattie and little brother John preceded him in death many years ago. Nine weeks ago Miles was stricken with congestion of the lungs and a bronchial cough. He recovered from this affliction but suffered several relapses due to weak heart action, kidney trouble and a general decline due to old age. He was a patient sufferer but realized that he had lived more than his allotted time and often expressed his desire to be taken to the heavenly home that awaited him. At the age of seventeen years, he enlisted in the War of the Rebellion and served his country until its close. He was a member of the 4th Iowa Light Artillery. Only one member of his company, Levi Airy of Oskaloosa, survives him. He was married to Emma I. Turner, January 15, 1879. To this union was born one child, Homer, October 22, of the same year. Ten years ago a daughter came to this family by the marriage of Homer to Miss Ida Dode to whom Miles was very devoted. The other surviving relatives are his sisters Mary Corwin and Elizabeth Himes of Des Moines, Paulina Turner and Callie Lathrop, of Oskaloosa, his sister-in-law Priscilla Prine of Oskaloosa, and numerous other relatives who mourn his passing. Miles was of a cheerful disposition and kindly disposed toward all with whom he came in contact. His habits were thrifty and he lived an upright life with malice toward none and charity for all. He was a member of the Oskaloosa Christian church. Funeral services were held at the country home Friday at 2 o'clock p.m., March 12, 1920, conducted by his pastor Geo. E. Purdy of the Christian church. Mrs. Purdy and Miss Clara McFate with Miss Miller at the piano, sang appropriate songs. The old soldiers were unable to be present because of the roads and most of them are becoming feeble. The house was full of friends and neighbors and many acquaintances from the city. Miles Prine was one of the best known men in Mahaska county and he was foremost in support of everything that was for the betterment of his locality or the county as a whole. He was a leader in his community in anything from a party caucus of the old day to a social party or a family gathering and he was liked by every one. Miles Prine will be remembered far beyond his time and his generation for he has left the stamp of a great personality upon all who knew him, both old and young and in times to come many are yet to hear of Miles Prine and the things he did.
