Mr. Geitzen was the father of our townsman, Henry Geitzen. He was born in Geraldstein, Rhine Province, Prussia, February 27, 1810. He came to America in 1846, settling in Wisconsin. He came to Nebraska in 1869, locating in Dodge county. He came to Humphrey in 1885, and has made his home here with his son ever since. He had two sons and one daughter. The other son is John B. Geitzen, of Columbus. The daughter is Mrs. C. C. Birstel, of Riverside, California. His wife preceded him nearly 20 years, having died in October, 1879. Mr. Gietzel is respected and honored by those with whom he came in contact here. He was a pleasant, quiet gentleman, of ripe old age, with whom it was a pleasure for the younger generation to converse. He had anticipated the end of earthly life for some time, and waited for it with resigned patience. By his death the family loses a loving and much loved member. They have the sympathy of all in their sorrow. The funeral services were held at St. Francis church this morning, and the remains taken to Fremont this noon for interment beside those of his wife who had gone before. Mr. and Mrs. H. Gietzen, Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Gietzen, Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Byrnes, Willie Gietzen and Peter Bodewig went to Fremont to attend the interment. Mathias Gietzen, one of the pioneers of Dodge county, died in Humphrey, February 16th, and was buried in Fremont yesterday afternoon, his remains being laid by the side of his wife in Ridge cemetery. The deceased was 86 years of age and was born in Prussia. He came to this state in 1869 locating in Dodge county, where he lived for a number of years. He leaves three children. Mr. and Mrs. H. Gietzen, Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Gietzen, Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Byrnes, Willie Gietzen and Peter Bodewig accompanied the remains from Humphrey to this place.
