Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, November 8, at Nelson Community United Church of Christ with Pastor Royce Buchtel officiating. Burial was in the Nelson Cemetery. Klawitter-Price Funeral Home of Nelson was in charge of the arrangements. Born in Nuckolls County, Nebraska, February 14, 1898, at the Hauser farm south of Oak, Mattie was the second eldest child of Ellen (Erickson) and Henry Hauser. Preceding her in death were her husband, Bennett in 1962, her mother, father, sister Vyrl Marpel and brother Clayton. She received her education at the Star School, Oak School and Davenport Schools, graduating from Davenport High School in 1918. After graduation she worked at the Scroggin and Co. Bank at Oak, Nebraska. Mattie then continued her schooling at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, McCook Junior College and Kearney State College. Her thirty-five year teaching career started at the Star School (near Oak), and then continued at Bostwick, Arapahoe and Holbrook, Nebraska. June 14, 1932, she was untied in marriage to Bennett "Ben" Phillipson. To this union was born one daughter, Mary. Mattie's family includes her daughter, Mary, son-in-law Jerry Decker of Lincoln, grandson Mike and granddaughter-in-law Brenda, great grandson Jason Decker, great granddaughters Tricia and Melanie Crary of Lincoln, granddaughter Carol and grandson-in-law Bill, great grandson Jim, great granddaughters Ann and Amy Weaver of Geneva. She also leaves to mourn one sister, Mrs. Ruth Snyder of Nelson, nephew Russell Snyder and wife Ann of Nelson, niece Polly Hyde and husband Don of Norfolk, Nebraska. Mattie spent most of her adult life at Holbrook, ten years at Lincoln, five years at the Nelson Good Samaritan Center and 1 3/4 years at the Waverly Community Care Nursing Home. She was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith at Holbrook United Methodist Church. Later she transferred her membership to the Methodist Church at Nelson, Nebraska. Mattie was active in many social and volunteer activities. She was a member of the Holbrook United Methodist Women, the Holbrook Federated Women's Club, Holbrook Music Club, Arapahoe Area Retired Teachers Association, Lincoln Area Retired Teachers Association, Rena Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star for over 50 years (where she held the office of Worthy Matron), Four Leaf Clover Club and a grandmother of the Holbrook FHA Chapter. Mattie's life touched many as she was a very dedicated teacher. She enjoyed attending all the events her grandchildren and great grandchildren participated in.
