Description	:	Mattie Dane Holt nee Tyler, formerly Allen was a loving, giving, sad, Christian woman. Her first husband was Patrick Pharoah Allen, the son of Moses Gurley & Mary nee Barnhill Allen. In 1940, they were living in Laurinburg, Scotland County, North Carolina with their children, Lonnie Howard, Hal (Buck), Lola Irene and David. Her first husband was Patrick Pharoah Allen, the son of Moses Gurley & Mary nee Barnhill Allen. In 1940, they were living in Laurinburg, Scotland County, North Carolina with their children, Lonnie Howard, Hal (Buck), Lola Irene and David. Shortly thereafter, Patrick left to go to the store and never returned. No one knew what happened to him. If they did, they weren't talking. Day in and day out, Mattie and her children were not only distraught but suffering mentally, emotionally and economically. Time came and went. Mattie applied for social security only to be denied. Her husband, Patrick had to be missing seven years before she could get a check. Neighbors and the church shunned Mattie when she moved in with Manning Holt. Afterall, in that era it was a sin. Yet, legally, Mattie could not marry. What was she to do? Manning Holt saved the family literally in that he was attracted to her and accepted her and her children. Manning Holt not only lifted their spirits but also gave them a better way of life. Mattie couldn't marry Manning until Patrick was found and returned to divorce or declared dead. Life went on and Mattie survived with Manning Holt until his death on May 19, 1976. The children grew into adults married and had children of their own. Mattie's son, Hal (Buck) got to talking with a cousin about his dad and what she knew about the situation at a family reunion. He relayed to her the last time he saw his dad was when he was eight years old when he was very sick in the hospital. His father was wearing a United States Navy uniform. He always wondered about his dad and wanted to know before he kicked the bucket. Thus, the cousin talked with a family friend who knew a Private Investigator. The P.I. tracked Patrick down right to his grave and learned a few things about him. Patrick had left and had several relationships with other women that produced offspring. He married them and disappeared on each as well. At some point he met 16 year old Helen Burton while driving a bus in Richmond, Virginia. He swept her off her feet and they married and produced children. Pharoah died of a brain tumor in the Veteran's Administration Hospital in Richmond, Virginia on February 27, 1958. He was 45 years old. The marriage of Helen Burton Allen and Pharoah Patrick Allen was not legal. Yet, she collected his social security and V.A. benefits and never struggled the way Mattie Dane Tyler Allen did with her children. Helen raised her children from the age of 29 alone since she never remarried. Such is the story of Patrick Pharoah Allen, first husband of Mattie Dane Tyler (Allen) Holt. Perhaps his brain tumor was growing and causing him to forget to come home to the others. While some may not agree with this epitaph, it was Mattie's life. As a result of the stigma of the times, Mattie lived a life of chronic depression because of how she struggled when Patrick walked away on her and her children without notice to never be heard from again. Mattie was survived by her children, Lonnie Howard,Hal B. "Buck", Lola Irene and David; her sisters, Leila Johnson, Nettie Rabon and brother Kirk G. Tyler, Sr.; other family and friends. Mattie wanted this story told since she was judged in life. She didn't say much, she just endured and survived. Mattie was an amazing woman.
