Maude was born Oct. 12, 1903, at Butte, the eldest child of Fred and Minnie Webber. When Maude was five years old and her brother, Fred, was three, the family returned to the Cornwall district of England, where her father felt he would have an easier time finding work. After the birth of another son, Howard, Minnie returned to Butte with Maude and Howard so her next son, Leland, would be born in America. After Fred Sr. and Fred Jr. arrived in Butte, the family moved to the Plains area and homesteaded. Another son and daughter, Les and Elsie, were born there. Maude was graduated from Plains High School and moved to Dillon where she enrolled in Montana State Normal School (now Western Montana College). Her first teaching position was at Judith Gap, where she met and married Clarence Bryan. The couple moved to Billings, where their son, Tom, and daughter, Joanne, were born. After eight years of marriage, Maude and Clarence were divorced. Maude remained in Billings and taught elementary school. In 1943, Maude and Clarence “Bill” Norberg were married and made their home at Plains. Bill thought he could make a farmer’s wife of Maude, but after one year she returned to her true vocation, teaching. For 10 years, she and Emerson Richardson were the guiding force at Plains Junior High School. Many Students remember her as their best and most demanding teacher. In 1955, following Bill’s death, Maude and E.L. Johnson were married. After his death in 1973, she continued to live at Plains until 1987, when she moved to a retirement home at Spokane to be near her son, Tom. During those years, she spent the holiday seasons with her daughter, Joanne, in Hawaii. While living at Plains, Maude was an active member of Plains and Ideal Chapter No. 40, Order of the Eastern Star. Survivors include a son, Thomas Bryan, Spokane, Wash.; a daughter, Joanne Jones, Maui, Hawaii; two brothers, Lee and Fred Webber, and sister, Elsie Bates, all of Plains; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Memorials were suggested to the Shodair Children’s Hospital of Helena.
