She would have celebrated her 105th birthday Aug. 20. Born during the administration of President Benjamin Harrison, the former Maude Beach Smith was born and raised at Highland, her family's Calvert County tobacco plantation, which they obtained as a land grant from the King of England in 1671. Highland, part of the Maryland Historical Trust, dates from the mid-1700s. Educated with her sisters in a one-room school, Mrs. Wiley later moved with her family to a North Charles Street residence in 1902. The Great Baltimore Fire of February 1904 was a notable event of her teen-age years. "She clearly recalled the bitter cold Sunday with her two sisters walking home from St. Michael's Episcopal Church amid great excitement and confusion in the streets," wrote her daughter-in-law, Jeanne Wiley of Timonium, in a family memoir. "There were loud cries summoning all available horses and carriages urgently needed to remove critical business records and books from burning and threatened offices and buildings." Once home, the girls scurried through a fourth-floor trap door in their home and watched the fire. Mrs. Wiley graduated from the Maryland State Normal School, then at Lafayette and Carrollton avenues, in 1910. She taught elementary school in Canton and later Pimlico, until her 1919 marriage to William R. Wiley, a former teacher, principal and World War I artillery officer. Mr. Wiley, superintendent of the German Orphan Home in Catonsville from 1935 to his retirement in 1955, died in 1959. "She was adored by the students at the German Orphan Home who called her 'Mom' and some of them still came to visit her after all these years," said Ethel Zimmerman of Catonsville, a friend of 55 years. A self-reliant, quiet and gracious woman, Mrs. Wiley overcame hip surgeries at 92 and 94 and only agreed to occasional use of a cane when she turned 100. "She used to get embarrassed with each passing birthday and would say, 'I never wanted to be that old,' " said Jeanne Wiley. She remembered Mrs. Wiley as a lively conversationalist who enjoyed keeping up with current events and reading newspapers and magazines until her sight began to fail several months ago. She said her mother-in-law was a fervent viewer of televised golf matches and enjoyed cheering on the Washington Redskins. Mrs. Wiley was a longtime member of St. Timothy's Episcopal Church, and a member of the Catonsville Women's Club and author of its 1947 history. Services were set for 1:30 p.m. today at Bethel Presbyterian Church, 4135 Norrisville Road in White Hall. She is survived by a son, William R. Wiley of Timonium; a daughter, Ruth Ellen McLeod of Lakeville, Minn.; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
