Read More	Daughter of Jesse Mercer and Mary Frances Perry Saunders Wife of Charles Phillip Simmons 11 11 1912 Osborne County, Kansas one son and three daughters Maude Mary Saunders Simmons passed away at 9:20 Saturday evening, September 18, 1971, at Deshler, Nebraska at the age of 92 years, 3 month (sic) and 3 days. She was the daughter of Jesse and Mary Jackson Saunders - born June 15, 1879, at Harrisonville, Missouri. She came to Kansas with her parents, five brothers and one sister in 1888. They lived on a farm north of Downs. She attended school at the Pleasant Ridge rural school. She is the last of her parental family. She was married to Charles Phillip Simmons on November 12, 1912. After their marriage they moved to their farm southeast of Downs, where all of their children were born. Born to this union were three girls, Helen, and twins, Goldie and Gladys, and one son, Claude Charles, who was killed in action near Nuremberg, Germany, during the second World War on April 15, 1945. After the death of their son, they moved to town in the summer of the same year. Mr. Simmons passed away February 13, 1948. Mrs. Simmons continued to live in her own home at 918 West Delay Street as long as her health permitted. She then made her home with her daughters. Her greatest mission in life was to care for her family. She was a gentle woman, a lady of character and a true friend. She was a member of the Downs Christian Church since early childhood, and was always faithful to her Lord and Saviour. During her long illness she never complained and was always thankful of kindnesses shown her. Those who survive are Mrs. Helen Thayer and husband Henry of Deshler, Nebraska; Mrs. Goldie Kral and husband, Joe of Wilson, Kansas; Mrs. Gladys Miller and husband, Dean of Aurora, Missouri; four grandchildren, Robert Kennedy of Beatrice, Nebraska, Leonard Wilson of Lafayette, Colorado, LaVerne Miller of Colby, Kansas and Janice Miller of Phoenix, Arizona, five step-grandchildren, Marvin Thayer, Mervin Thayer, Jim Thayer, Benny Thayer and Mrs. Janice Bohling; five great grandchildren; and other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held Wednesday, September 22 at 2 p.m. in the Downs Christian Church. Officiating were former pastor, Clifford Hauxwell and present pastor, Leland Griffin. The soloist was Leland Griffin, accompanied by Mrs. Vernon Domoney. Casket bearers were Donald Saunders, Glen Scott, James Harrison, Pat Benefiel, Jerry Berkley and Warren Cary.
