She was born on December 30, 1920 in Essexville to the late William L. and Margaret L. (Kummerer) Mayhew and resided there her entire life. On June 6, 1940, Maureen married Raymond A. Groff and he preceded her in death in 1996. She worked as a tax accountant and bookkeeper for over 60 years in addition to raising her family. Passed away on Thursday, December 10, 2009 at Brian's House following a five month illness. She was born on December 30, 1920 in Essexville to the late William L. and Margaret L. (Kummerer) Mayhew and resided there her entire life. On June 6, 1940, Maureen married Raymond A. Groff and he preceded her in death in 1996. She worked as a tax accountant and bookkeeper for over 60 years in addition to raising her family. Maureen was a lifelong, faithful member of St. John the Evangelist Church and a willing, cheerful volunteer to many charitable organizations. Maureen is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Margaret M. "Peggy" and Kenneth Goss of Florida; her daughter, Lois A. Cataline of Bay City; six grandsons; one granddaughter, and eight great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Evelyn Mayhew of Bay City and Bernice Hertel of California; along with many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her sister, Faye A. Main, her brothers, William J. and Alfred M. Mayhew; and her grandson, Jeffrey W. Goss. The family would like to thank the staff at Brian's House and Byron and Susan Savage, along with the many others that showed Maureen kindness and love during her lifetime and especially these last months. Maureen always knew you were there. She loved all of you very much. We are truly grateful. The Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated Tuesday, December 15, 2009 at 12:00 p.m. in St. John the Evangelist Church, Essexville. Rev. Patrick C. O'Connor will preside and interment will follow in St. Patrick Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to Brian's House, Bay City or St. John the Evangelist Church, Essexville. Visitation will be at church Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the Mass. www.trahanfc.com
