Read More	Maurice Merle McReynolds (June 28, 1920 - March 14, 2013) Maurice Merle McReynolds, 92, of Burlington, Kansas, died Thursday, March 14, 2013, at the Coffey County Hospital in Burlington. He was born June 28, 1920, at the Pleasant Township farm home of his parents George Merle and Mabel Annie (Black) McReynolds west of Burlington. He attended grade school at Mount Pleasant, District 49, grade school and graduated from Burlington High School in 1938. On April 8, 1941, he was married to Frances Marie Birk in Burlington. When first married they moved to their farm home 5 ¾ miles west of Burlington and lived there together until 2003, when she had to move to the Life Care Center. He continued to live on the farm until December 2008 when he moved to The Meadows. In 1978 he and his wife purchased 160 acres directly across the road north of their house that was originally purchased from the Government by his great-great uncle Andrew McReynolds in 1860 and later owned by his great-grandfather John McReynolds and grandfather Willis McReynolds. Surviving are his three children, Richard McReynolds (Vickie), Topeka, Marilyn Smith, (Dwight), Douglass, and Jeanice Shimon (Paul), Winfield; six grandchildren, Ann Kuebler, (Joshua), Topeka, Ryan McReynolds (Courtney), Mead, CO, Matthew Smith, Lenexa, Bethany Smith, Lincoln, NE, Andrew Shimon, Junction City, and Kaitlin Shimon, Winfield; and five great-grandchildren, Jakob, Noah, Malachi, and Micaiah Kuebler, Topeka, and Elyse McReynolds, Mead, CO. He was preceded by his wife, Frances; his parents; his sister, Dorothy Schif; and a grandson, Trevor Shimon. Mr. McReynolds was a farmer-stockman and also sold DeKalb seed and ag lime to area farmers for many years. He and his wife were awarded the Kansas Bankers Association Soil Conservation Award in 2004. Prior to marriage he had worked for the Rural Electrification Association (REA) and helped build the first power line from Burlington to the St. Louis Store southwest of Gridley in 1938. He helped organize Coffey County Rural Water District No. 2 in 1966 and served on the Board of Directors as Treasurer for 43 years. The district, originally with 92 miles, now has over 600 miles of water line. He was a member of the Gridley United Methodist Church since 1941. He served as Pleasant Township Treasurer for 50 years his service ending just the week before his final illness. He was a member of the Errett Grange for 25 years until it disbanded. He and his wife also enjoyed traveling and had visited many states, Canada, Mexico, and Jamaica. Funeral services will be held 10:30 A.M. Saturday, March 23, 2013, at Jones Funeral Home in Burlington with burial following in Graceland Cemetery in Burlington.
