Description	:	Maurice "Mo" Merrill Carlton Jr., 86, formerly of Lincoln, died Sunday, August 14th, 2011 in Topeka, Kan. Mo was born December 22, 1924 in Omaha to Avis Allen Carlton and Maurice Merrill Carlton Sr. He was married to Jeanne Anderson on October 9th, 1944. They were blessed with 67 happy years of marriage. Read More	Maurice "Mo" Merrill Carlton Jr., 86, formerly of Lincoln, died Sunday, August 14th, 2011 in Topeka, Kan. Mo was born December 22, 1924 in Omaha to Avis Allen Carlton and Maurice Merrill Carlton Sr. He was married to Jeanne Anderson on October 9th, 1944. They were blessed with 67 happy years of marriage. Mo graduated from Lincoln Northeast High School in 1943. He joined the Navy during W.W.II after graduation. Boot camp was at Farragut, Idaho where he was trained for tanker duty and then he left the states in November with the Armed Guard. Mo has received the American Asiatic Pacific campaign ribbon with three bronze stars for the Gilbert, Bougainville and Rendova campaigns, the African campaign and American Defense ribbon. Mo was a member of Havelock Methodist Church, The American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Havelock Odd Fellows Post 244, Past President Nebraska Navy Armed Guard, Past President of Havelock Business Association, Past President Shoe Repairman Association, Boy Scout and merit badge examiner. For forty years he was owner of Carlton's Shoe Store in Havelock. The shoe store was a repair shop that also sold men's work boots, but Mo expanded the business to include women's and children's shoes as well. He was an excellent salesman and everybody was a friend he hadn't met yet. Outside of a few months in San Francisco they lived their entire lives in Lincoln. In January of 2010 they moved to Topeka to be closer to their daughter. Mo enjoyed people. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, golfer, gardener and bridge player. Mo and Jean loved to travel and spent many years exploring new places and having a great time. After retirement his interest in veterans affairs blossomed. He was instrumental in establishing the Veteran's Memorial Gardens in Lincoln. He loved meeting with other vets and sharing stories. A highlight of his life was to go to Washington D.C. on the Honor Flight to tour the W.W.II Monument, Iwo Jima, Korean War Memorial and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Mo made many new friends during his short time in Topeka and once again established a veteran's group at their assisted living that meets once a month for coffee and kibitzing. Mo is survived by his wife, Jean; children, Marilyn Corbett of Ft. Collins, Colo., Sue and Mike Smith of Centennial, Colo., Marla and Gary King of Topeka; brother, Dick Carlton of Hampton, S.C.; grandchildren, Brent and Jinny O'Conner of Omaha, Cheri and Dave Wolfe of Bennet, Colo., Landon Bradshaw of Kelowna, B.C., Canada, Brandi Herbst of Ft Collins, Colo., Angie and Kurt Green of Raymond, Jim and Lindsay Corbett of Las Cruses, N.M., Hank Bradshaw of Denver, Elisa and Travis Hillman of Papillion; sister-in-law and spouse, Jackie and Duane Jones of Woodstock, Ill.; brother-in-law, Glenn Gordon of Colorado Springs, Colo.; 12 great grandchildren; nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends. Preceded in death by parents, Maurice and Avis Carlton; son-in-law Al Corbett; sister-in-law and spouse, Arlys and Pooch Porter; sister-in-law, Joyce Gordon. Memorial service: 11 a.m. Saturday (8-27-11) Roper and Sons Chapel, 4300 'O' Street. Pastor Frank VanCampen, officiating. Prior interment, 9:30 a.m., in Fairview Cemetery with military graveside rites. Family will greet friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday at funeral home.
