Description	:	Mavis J. Howland, 94, of Hecla, SD, passed away June 24, 2020 at Bethany Retirement Home, Fargo, ND. She was born on July 17, 1925 in Liberty Township, Hecla, SD to Emil and Ella (Stolle) Elsen. She was baptized at Zion Lutheran Church, Aberdeen, SD. She attended the Engle School and graduated from Hecla High School and then attended Northern State Teachers College graduating with B.A. & B.S. degrees. Howland, 94, of Hecla, SD, passed away June 24, 2020 at Bethany Retirement Home, Fargo, ND. She was born on July 17, 1925 in Liberty Township, Hecla, SD to Emil and Ella (Stolle) Elsen. She was baptized at Zion Lutheran Church, Aberdeen, SD. She attended the Engle School and graduated from Hecla High School and then attended Northern State Teachers College graduating with B.A. & B.S. degrees. She was united in marriage to Vernon Howland on February 18, 1949. They moved to a farm south of Houghton. In 1972, they moved into Hecla. Vern passed away on February 11, 2003. Mavis was a school teacher for 41½ years; starting out with her first teaching job at Hyatt School near Ludden before teaching at Bell School from 1946 to 1949. She then subbed for several years in the Houghton area and began full time teaching again in 1958. Her teaching career continued at Houghton for 4 years, Daly Corner School for 3 years, and in 1967 Mavis began teaching at Hecla until retiring in 1990. Mavis then substitute taught in area schools for 10 years. She was a great teacher and had many fond memories of her “children”. Mavis was an active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Hecla, where she was a Sunday School Teacher, involved with Luther League, was a council member, belonged to Circle, the Women’s Group and was Conference Mission Growth Secretary. She also belonged to B.C.E.A., Uniserve, and was a lifetime member of S.D.E.A. and N.E.A. Mavis was an avid Twins fan. She is survived by two children, Judy Berquam and Tim (Jeanne) Howland; three granddaughters; three great-granddaughters; one great-grandson; and one sister, Marie Willey. Mavis was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Vern, four brothers, William, Bernard, Marvin and Merlyn and one sister, Marvel Larson. Visitation will be held on Monday, June 29, 2020 from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. followed by her funeral at 2:00 p.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Hecla, SD. Burial will be at the Hecla City Cemetery.
