Sherwood, age 87, of Carroll, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, May 14, 2014 at the Dallas County Medical Center in Perry, Iowa. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Monday, May 19, 2014 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Carroll with Pastor Brian Licht officiating. Friends may call at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll after 5:00 P.M. on Sunday where there will be a prayer service held at 7:00 P.M. The casket will be moved to the church at 8:30 A.M. on Monday where visitation will resume until the time of service. Organist for the service will be Tami Biggerstaff and soloist will be Marv Toft. Casket bearers will be Craig Sherwood, Jacob Sherwood, Cole Trent, September Trent, Larry Moeller, David Brown, and Brian Sherwood. Burial will be in the Carroll City Cemetery with military honors by the Carroll American Legion. Born on October 11, 1926 on a farm near Chester, Nebraska, he was the son of Harley George and Anna Webb (Ensley) Sherwood. He was baptized in the Christian Church, went to public school, belonged to 4-H and the Dairy, Beef and Garden Clubs. In February of 1945, Max was drafted into the United States Army and took basic and advanced infantry training in Texas. He served in the 967th Anti-Aircraft Battalion in the Philippines. He also served in the 6th Army Infantry Regiment in Korea. He was honorably discharged in December on 1946. He then joined the United States Naval Reserves at Lincoln Nebraska in 1947 and was honorably discharged in 1952. Max attended the Agricultural College at the University of Nebraska from 1947 – 1950 and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Soil Science and Soil Conservation. He also attended the Soil Science Institute at Iowa State University. He was married to Leona Woznick in April of 1949 at the Christian Church in Lincoln, Nebraska. Max worked as a soil scientist on soil investigation, classification and mapping for the Soil Conservation Service and Bureau of Reclamation in North Dakota, Nebraska and Montana before moving to Iowa in 1967. He worked on soil surveys in Mahaska, Adair, Carroll, Greene, Ida and Cass Counties and was the principal author of soil survey reports for Mahaska, Adair, Carroll, and Greene counties. Max was certified as a professional soil scientist by the American Registry of Certified Professionals in agronomy, crops and soils. He worked on soil surveys for 31 years, being crew chief for 15 years. He worked 5 years in western Nebraska and as a county Agricultural agent for the Extension Service. He worked part time as a water color paint artist in Carroll for three years. Max joined Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Greenfield, Iowa in 1970 and he is currently a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Carroll. In his younger years he taught Sunday school, sang in the choir and did carpentry work in the church. He was currently involved in senior fellowship, prayer time, adult Bible class, and attending services with the church at nursing homes. Max was a charter member of the Carroll County Genealogical Society and a member of the Professional Soil Classifiers of Iowa. He was also a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, the Carroll Recreation Center, the Iowa Chapter of Royal Rover Campers, and the Carroll American Legion. He and Leona spent several winters in the Rio Grand Valley of South Texas during retirement. Over the years his hobbies included photography, golf, travel, gardening, walking, painting, dancing, playing guitar, and Yoga stretching exercises. Max is survived by his wife Leona of Carroll; a daughter Nancy Wymore and her husband Steven of Oskaloosa, Iowa; two sons: Craig Sherwood and his wife Jan of Nevada, Iowa, and Brian Sherwood of Canton, Texas; seven grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; his twin brother Don Sherwood and his wife Adair of Oceanside, California; a sister Maryann Sherwood Alloway of Omaha; two brothers-in-law Alvin Woznick and his wife Faye of Fredrick, Colorado, and Eugene Woznick and his wife Sharon of Scotts Bluff, Nebraska; a sister-in-law Irene Bixenmann of Grand Island, Nebraska; and several nieces and nephews. Max was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers: Gail and Leland, a sister Pauline Brown, and a daughter-in-law Laura Sherwood.
