Mr. Callender was born July 27, 1926, in Woodbine, Iowa, the son of Sherman and Rose Callender. He was raised in Woodbine. He served in the U.S. Army with the paratroopers from 1946 to 1947. Following his discharge, he moved to Sioux City. He married Bluette Durig on July 24, 1948, in Elk Point, S.D. He was employed as a construction laborer through the Labor Local 427. He retired around 1984. The couple moved to Westfield three years ago. He was a member of Laborers International Union 427 and the Saddle Club. He enjoyed horse trading and auctions. Survivors include his wife; seven sons, David and his wife, Susan, Dennis and his wife, Penny, and Daniel and his wife, Kristina, all of Sioux City, Thomas and his wife, Sue, of Shenandoah, Iowa, John and his wife, Terasa, of Omaha, Mark and his wife, Sonya, of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Michael of Yarmouth, Mass.; three daughters, Barbara Moss of West Des Moines, Renee and her husband, Mike Pope of Sioux City and Melissa and her husband, Mark Newsom of Omaha; 21 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Blanche Ogle of Sioux City and Opal Lovell of Omaha; and three half sisters, Marilyn Bonner of Omaha, Shirley of Texas, and Linda of Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Judith Callender; five brothers and three sisters. Pallbearers will be his sons. Sioux City Journal February 9, 2001 Sioux City, Iowa
