Messerole, 87, of Red Oak, Iowa, formerly of Pierson, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2008, at Good Samaritan Center in Red Oak following a brief illness. Messerole, 87, of Red Oak, Iowa, formerly of Pierson, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2008, at Good Samaritan Center in Red Oak following a brief illness. Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Johnson-Earnest Funeral Home in Kingsley, Iowa, with the Rev. Roger Kurtenbach of Kingsley United Methodist Church officiating. Private graveside services will be held. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service Saturday at the funeral home. Max E. Messerole was born Jan. 15, 1921, in Pierson, to Roy and Willye (Hearn) Messerole. He attended school in Pierson and graduated in 1939. He loved sports and excelled in baseball as a pitcher. On Oct. 23, 1942, he was inducted into the U.S. Army. He served as a combat engineer during World War II and fought in four major campaigns. He was awarded four Bronze Star Medals, the Good Conduct Medal, the Distinguished Unit Badge and the Purple Heart Medal. He was honorably discharged on Oct. 19, 1945, having attained the rank of Tec. 5. Following the war, he made Council Bluffs, Iowa, his home. He worked in Omaha at Lozier Company as a sheet metal worker for many years. He retired and moved to Red Oak. He was a resident at the Good Samaritan Center for a brief time. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed golfing. He also listened to a great deal of jazz and big band music. He is lovingly remembered by his sister, Beatrice Messerole of South Sioux City; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Mel; and two sisters, Bernice and Beryl
