He was born May 20, 1922 in Goshen, Indiana to Ora and Grace (Snell) Armey. He married Mary Ellen Winger in Fort Wayne, Indiana on February 4, 1946. He was the sanitation officer of Wabash County 24 years retiring in 1984. He joined the Army in January 1940 and served 5½ years. Max drove an amphibian tank on Normandy Beach on D-Day and was missing in action 23 days. After the war ended, he joined the National Guard and attended Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning, GA for 14½ weeks. He served 6 years as 2nd Lieutenant in the Guard. Max was a member of the Congregational Christian Church in North Manchester, member and Past Master of the Wabash Hanna Masonic Lodge #61 F&AM, the Knight of York Cross of Honor, the Chapter, Council, and Commandry in Peru, Fort Wayne Mizpah Shrine and the Wabash Shrine Club. Max was a former member and Past Patron of the Wabash Order of the Eastern Star and a current member of the Ivy Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star in North Manchester. He also was a member and Past Commander of the VFW Post 286 and a member of the American Legion #15 both of Wabash. He was a member of the North Manchester Moose Lodge and the Retired Indiana Public Employees Association. Max enjoyed camping, traveling, mushroom hunting, and playing with his grandchildren. He is survived by Wife, Mary Ellen Armey of North Manchester, Indiana; three daughters, Sheryl K. (Stephen) Carter of North Manchester, Indiana, Cinda (Dennis) Deal of Franklin, Indiana, Lu Ann (David) Wendel of North Manchester; seven grandchildren, Stephanie (Nathan) Burke of Roann, Indiana, Jennifer (Francisco) Cutter of Baltimore, Maryland, Megan Deal and Emily Deal both of Bloomington, Indiana, Allison Blue and Lindsay Blue both of Fort Wayne, Indiana, Shannon (Melissa) Carter of North Manchester; nine great-grandchildren, Savannah Seyer and Saydah Burke both of Roann, Indiana, Celina Carter, Cierra Carter, Sam Renz, and Max Carter all of North Manchester, Skyler Burke, Sawyer Burke, and Slayden Burke all of Roann, Indiana; Brother, Marvin (Florence) Armey of North Manchester; sister, Mildred Miller of Andrews, Indiana. He was preceeded in death by three brothers, Maurice Armey, Milburn Armey, and Richard Armey, one sister Mary Catherine Armey, and one son-in-law Bill Blue. Funeral Services will be held at Grandstaff-Hentgen Bender Chapel, 207 W. Main Street North Manchester on Friday, March 28, 2008 at 1:30pm with Pastor J.P. Freeman officiating. Burial will be in Ulrey Cemetery. Friends may call from 2-8pm Thursday, March 27, 2008 at the funeral home, with Masonic Services at 7:30pm. Preferred memorials are to Congregational Christian Church or Wabash-Miami Home Healthcare and Hospice.
