He was born Dec. 14, 1920, to Chris and Hilda (Hansen) Christensen on the family farm near Farwell. He was baptized into the Lutheran faith at St. Peder’s Lutheran Church in Nysted. He was born Dec. 14, 1920, to Chris and Hilda (Hansen) Christensen on the family farm near Farwell. He was baptized into the Lutheran faith at St. Peder’s Lutheran Church in Nysted. Max attended school at District 47. He enlisted in the United States Army in August 1942. He served as a parts clerk and rifle marksman during World War II with the 255th Ordnance Medium Maintenance Company in the European Theatre from 1942 to 1945 with a rank of Sergeant Fourth Class. He was awarded five battle stars for actions in campaigns in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes (Battle of the Bulge) and Central Europe. He returned to Howard County and began farming. On March 28, 1946, he was united in marriage to Marjorie Frandsen in Dannebrog. While farming near Nysted, Max was an active member of St. Peder’s Lutheran Church, Dannebrog Rural Fire District Board and Howard County REA. Max and Marge moved to Fremont in 1991. Max was an active volunteer at Low Income Ministry and First Lutheran Church. He has been employed at Baker’s since 2000. He was an avid card player. Max faithfully donated blood to the American Red Cross, having donated more than 26 gallons in his lifetime. He saw this as “just the right thing to do.” He was a devoted husband and family man, dedicated worker, volunteer, neighbor and friend. Survivors include two daughters and a son-in-law, Kathleen Christensen of Fort Wayne, Ind., and Caryl and the Rev. Mark Grorud of Fremont; three grandchildren and their spouses, Chris Grorud of Jakarta, Indonesia, Marit and Mark Sullivan of Hudson, Wis., and Matthew and Rachel Eby of Noblesville, Ind.; three great-grandsons, Paul Robert Sullivan, Andrew Max Sullivan and Thomas Arthur Sullivan; and many nieces and nephews. Max was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie; a brother George; and five sisters, Sylvia Ibsen, Mildred Nelson, Katherine Crha, Alice Bartle and Grace Jensen. A memorial service will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 2, at First Lutheran Church in Fremont, with the Revs. Marty Tollefson and Mark Grorud officiating. Committal with military honors will precede the memorial service at 10:30 a.m. at Memorial Cemetery. There is no viewing, family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Ludvigsen Mortuary. In lieu of flowers, memorials to First Lutheran Church or Fremont Community Blood Drive, c/o American Red Cross, 3838 Dewey Ave., Omaha, NE 68105."
