Max Harold Gaston was born to Chester and Ethel Gaston on May 14, 1923 in Axtell, Kansas, where he grew up, the 3rd of 6 children. He helped with farming and graduated from Axtell High School. Max was preceded in death by his son, Paul and wives: Mary Alice (Nork) Gaston (mother of Paul and Douglas), Gloria Jean (Ousdahl) Gaston; also siblings: Meredith, Donald, Dorothy. He is survived by sisters Marjorie Mayer Harland, formerly of Marysville, presently in Wamego; and Shirley Malone of Burchard Nebraska. He is also survived by his son, Douglas Max (wife Rozanne). He has three grandchildren: Daniel (wife, Brenda), Lauren (husband, Daniel Vestal), and David; and three great grandchildren, Jackson, Joshua and Adelyn. After Pearl Harbor, he was called up at age 18 and joined the Army in the infantry. He was stationed In Okinawa and received the Bonze star for saving a wounded soldier. He also was given the Purple Heart for having been wounded in combat. He didn’t talk very much about the war, like many of those valiant men. When he came home from the war he married Mary Louise Nork and they had two sons, Douglas and Paul. She was in her early 30’s when she passed away with uterine cancer. Later Max married Gloria Jean Gaston and they were married 32 years. Max retired having many good years for the DOT supervising road maintenance. Max was a season ticket holder of K-State football and basketball and he enjoyed going to a few bowl games. There have been many family reunions and one of the best was when Max turned 90! At the end of a day of loving tributes, Max said, ”That was a pretty good party!” One of the highlights of travels was the Honor Flight for Veterans arranged by his niece, Linda Highland! He was overwhelmed with emotion and so many strangers thanking him for his service. He will be remembered for his honorable and kind-hearted nature, and as a wonderful husband, brother, father, father-in-law and Papa. A memorial fund is established and will be designated later. Contributions may be sent in care of Kinsley Mortuary.
