Description	:	Max Herschel Graves was born October 27, 1921, second child of John Ellis and Verdie Davis Graves. Herschel was raised in Pageland, South Carolina. After High School, Herschel briefly attended Clemson College as a pre-med student, but returned to Pageland to join in the family enterprises. Along with his father and brothers, Herschel was involved in a local mercantile shop, a chicken hatchery, and cattle farming. After High School, Herschel briefly attended Clemson College as a pre-med student, but returned to Pageland to join in the family enterprises. Along with his father and brothers, Herschel was involved in a local mercantile shop, a chicken hatchery, and cattle farming. Herschel entered the US Army on October 12, 1944, and was assigned to Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Forces (SHAEF) in Bavaria, Germany. After the war, while continuing with the family enterprises, Herschel started and operated several businesses himself, including: a seasonal produce stand that occupied the family every summer for many years; a seafood market and a bait/tackle shop. Additionally, he held jobs as rural mail carrier, truck driver and a licensed real estate agent. He was also active in civic affairs, serving as mayor of Pageland from 1960-64, participating in Democratic Party activities, and even attending an Inaugural event of President Kennedy. Herschel was an avid outdoorsman – sportsman, a gifted baseball pitcher, dedicated hunter and fisherman. He was infamous for his snow sledding with the kids, well into his late forties. Herschel married Frances Wakefield Martin on July 3, 1942. Together they had six children. After Frances passed, Herschel married Elsie Pigg Mattox in 1972. Herschel was instantly recognizable by his dark skin, physical stature and baritone voice. He died of a heart attack December 2, 1978, and is buried in the Graves Cemetery.
