Farney was born Oct. 8, 1928, in Clay Center, Kansas, the only child born to Merle E. and Madeleine (Johnston) Farney, and passed away Sunday, Nov. 22, 2015, at Memorial Hospital in Seward at the age of 87 years, 1 month and 14 days. As a young boy, Max attended Clay Center Public Schools and later enlisted in the U.S. Navy on Feb. 4, 1946, and was discharged in March 1968. He was an aviation crew chief petty officer and served on several aircraft carriers. Max was united in marriage to Emma Jean Bennett on June 7, 1952, in Hernando, Mississippi. They moved to Seward where they resided south of town. Max was a welder for many years at Walker Manufacturing. He retired and enjoyed fishing and hunting and was a member of the Masonic Oliver Lodge 38, AF&AM, the Sesostris Shrine, Seward VFW and Izaac Walton League, and he served as president with the Seward County Sheriff’s Posse. Survivors include his brother-in-law and spouse, Jim and Lauren Bennett of Sacramento, California, his special friends, Jim and Claire Windle of Seward, and his faithful companions, his dogs Oreo and Reggie. Max was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Jean, in 1998. A graveside service was held Nov. 25, 2015, at the Seward Cemetery with the Rev. Randy Wahl officiating military honors by the U.S. Navy Honors Program and the Seward American Legion. Memorial donations may be made to Best Friends Animal Sanctuary.
