Tyler was born on December 8, 1931 in rural Winnetoon to Howard and Nellibee Tyler. He lived in the Creighton area his entire life. He was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran, Creighton and served the congregation in multiple ways. He married Onie McClurg on May 27, 1956 in Atkinson after courting the waitress/teacher, while working on a road job outside Stuart. Kip was born in March of 1958 and was in Max's words, "His favorite Son". Max served his community as a volunteer fireman, a member of the Chamber of Commerce and a County Supervisor for many years. He served Christ's Church as a member of Zion Lutheran Church Council, head usher and general "fix it guy". He did many things for community and church that were behind the scenes, which often went unnoticed. He loved taking trips to the Caterpillar factory in Peoria, IL and spending hours fixing, welding, painting, grinding and creating all kinds of things in his shop. He enjoyed watching boxing on TV. When a boxing question came up in Trivial Pursuit, Max always knew the answer. He found enjoyment talking with friends and family, reading the paper every night and engaging in political discussions. By the way...if you did not know it...he was a diehard Republican. He looked forward to the annual fishing trips to Minnesota with the whole family. Max's real idea of a vacation, however, was going out on a road grader to fix something for somebody. His philosophy was "if you're not going to do something right, then don't do it at all!". He never really retired from working until his brain tumor forced him to do so. He was diagnosed with the tumor on July 19 at Faith Regional Center in Norfolk. In Omaha, it was determined to be inoperable. He underwent radiation and chemo-therapy treatments, which were unsuccessful. He continued the positive attitude he held all through his life, during his final battle as the cancer tried to rob him of dignity and life. He was a source of strength for his family, even while the tumor tried to break him. As music of faith played in the air, whispered prayers were spoken in his ears and gentle expressions of love wiped his fevered brow. Max quietly took his last breath at 6:55 a.m. on Monday morning. He leaves behind his wife, Onie; son and daughter-in-law, Kip and Sherri Tyler, of Omaha; three grandchildren; a brother, Chuck Tyler of Creighton; a sister and brother-in-law, Jean and Francis Montgomery, of Orchard; a sister-in-law and brother in-in-law, Mary and Roger Hawthorne of Chappell; six nephews; four nieces; many cousins and friends.
