BAILEY, Sr., a Rochester merchant for 45 years before his retirement in 1953, died Monday at 7:30 p.m. at Canterbury Manor. He had been admitted there March 9, following three weeks as a patient at Woodlawn hospital. He was 80 years of age. Mr. Bailey resided at Poet's Point on the north shore of Lake Manitou. He had operated the present Baileys' Hardware at 712 Main street from 1928 until his retirement in 1953, first in partership with the late George BLACK. However, Mr. Bailey entered the hardware business in 1918 with his father in the room that now is the south section of Schultz Variety Store. First known as S. P Bailey and Son Hardware, the firm became Black and Bailey Gardware after the death of the elder Mr. Bailey in 1923. The present Bailey building has been occupied by a hardware since its erection in 1911, by Stoner & Black, Henry Shurtz, Arthur Clinton and Steele and Shively prior to the present ownership. Mr. Bailey previously was associated with his father in the operation of the S. P Bailey and Son Lumber company from 1908-17. That business now is the Fulton County Lumber and Construction company. A former City Councilman, Mr. Bailey helped plan the construction of City Hall in 1924 and had been active in many civic affairs during his lifetime here. He attended the Trinity United Methodist church. A lifetime resident of Rochester, Mr. Bailey was born here Jan. 8, 1889, the son of Stilla P. and Essa MYERS BAILEY. His marriage was July 5, 1908, at St. Joseph, Mich., to Ida Bell WAGONER, who survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Dean (Lavonna) STINSON, Rochester, and Miss Betty Jane BAILEY, a registered nurse, Lakewood, Cal.; one son, Capt. Max P. BAILEY, Jr., U.S. Navy, stationed at Schaumburg, Ill., and attached to the Great Lakes Naval Air Station. Other survivors are two brothers, Byron "Beanie" and Elliott "Bill" BAILEY, present operators of Bailey's Hardware; one sister, Mrs. Robert (Margaret) SHAFER, Rochester; ten grandchildren, and fifteen great-grandchildre. Preceding in death were two sisters, Mrs. Hubert (Louise) TAYLOR and Mrs. Omer (Helen) WAGONER. Last rites will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Zimmerman Brothers funeral home with the Rev. William SIMPSON officiating. Burial will be in the I.O.O.F. cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 3 p.m. Wednesday.
