Born February 28, 1929 in Pekin, Md., she was the daughter of the late Alonzo P. and Bertha (Rowe) Miller. Maxine was also preceded in death by her husband, Leonard M. Murphy on June 4, 1967; three brothers, Quail, Raymond and William Miller, three sisters; Nondis Saber, Thelma McKenzie and Delores Arnold. Maxine was a 1947 graduate of Barton High School; she was the drum major for the Lonaconing Marching Band in the 1940's. She was a local Avon and Tupperware representative; food demonstrator for Wilkerson and Associates and Baum Promotions; member of the Women of the Moose Keyser Chapter 191; co-advisor for the Bruce High School pom-pom squad; Potomac Valley Hospital volunteer; and a long time nanny for Wendy, Lauren and Gina Brenneman. She was also a member of the Red Hat Society at Frostburg Village. Maxine was well known in the Tri-Towns area for portraying Mrs. Claus in the annual Tri-Towns Christmas parade from 1988 to 2003. Maxine was most proud of her family and was involved in their daily activities. She was a skilled seamstress, canner, gardener, and loved to travel. She especially took extra pride in her shot gun skills. Surviving are her three children, son, Patrick M. Murphy and wife Jacqueline, Bucks County, PA.; daughters, Kathryn M. Murphy and husband Robert G. Tetrick, of Westernport, Md. and Wendy I. Murphy of Ashburn, VA; sister, Virginia Whitacre, Sebring, FL; brother, Russell Rowe Miller and wife, Virginia, Vale Summit, Frostburg, MD; sisters-in-law, Hilda Clark, Westernport, MD; and Freeda Likins, Chardon, OH; as well as numerous nieces and nephews including John Gowans, Studio City, CA. and Brenda Gowans Faucette of Sebring, FL, who had resided with her in the early years. She is also survived by the nurses, care givers and staff at the Frostburg Village Nursing Home New Horizons Unit. With their love and care, she enjoyed a high quality of life. The family will receive friends at the Boal Funeral Home, Westernport, on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM. A funeral service will be conducted at the funeral home chapel on Friday at 1:00 PM, with Rev. Diane May officiating. Interment will be in Philos Cemetery, Westernport. Pallbearers will be Glenn Shingler, Patrick Murphy, Robert Tetrick, Carl Moore, Edward Miller, George Miller, and Wendy Murphy. Honorary pallbearers will be Milton and Maxine Hart, Jack and Ruth Fazenbaker, LeRoy Harris, Althea Brashear, Luther Metz, George Victor Bender, and John C. Sullivan. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Westernport Church of the Brethren, or the Bishop Walsh High School Tuition Fund.
