Description	:	May MacFarlane was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1873. She was the third child of Daniel MacFarlane and Mary MacQueen MacFarlane. She had a younger brother and a younger sister. May suffered a childhood illness early in life which left her almost totally deaf; however she learned to read lips when she was quite young. She was a very independent thinker even with her hearing disability. Her father Daniel was a captain on the Great Lakes for a ship that carried iron ore to processing plants. She was the third child of Daniel MacFarlane and Mary MacQueen MacFarlane. She had a younger brother and a younger sister. May suffered a childhood illness early in life which left her almost totally deaf; however she learned to read lips when she was quite young. She was a very independent thinker even with her hearing disability. Her father Daniel was a captain on the Great Lakes for a ship that carried iron ore to processing plants. Her mother Mary was a housewife some 10 years younger. In 1882, when May was eight years old, her mother died of consumption (TB). Her father hired housekeepers to help raise the children for a few years. In 1889, at his sister’s pleading, Daniel sent the three youngest children by train to Pullman, Washington to live with his sister Elizabeth (Libbie) MacFarlane Crawford and her husband Jake. May was only 15 years of age at that time and was very small. However, she was put in charge of her younger brother Johnnie and her little sister Bessie on the train trip west. She was a strong woman, even at such a young age. Jake owned and operated a meat market in Pullman, Washington at the time. The children lived with Jake and Libbie for several years. In 1892, May married Charles Hull who was the son of Harvey and Anna Crawford Hull who homesteaded on Spring Flat Creek between Colfax and Pullman. Anna was an older sister to Jake Crawford. May and Charles Hull homesteaded on the Prune Orchard Road, near Spring Flat. In 1910, when May posed with her homemade sign urging “Votes for Women”, she was 37 years old and a mother of five. In 1916, their last child was born. May died in Washington State in 1951.
