Mrs. Glantz, 72, wife of Harry Glantz of 2209 Elm St., died Thursday of cancer at her home. Her experiences in 1931 as the new schoolmarm at Huffine School were chronicled in the 1978 volume of Montana history, “North of the Yellowstone, South of the Bulls.” Teaching eight grades, she also was in charge of building fires in the stove, sweeping the floor, and other chores. She walked more than a mile to and from the schoolhouse. “They told me I was to stay at Mr. and Mrs. Tempero’s home over the hill. . . . I was escorted to the bedroom I was to share with the three oldest girls. . . . I lay on the straw-filled mattress that night wondering about what tomorrow would bring,” she wrote. It brought blizzards, late nights grading papers at an oil lamp, bull snakes on her trunk, county dances, community church services and a lifelong love of the people of the Bull Mountains. Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, she was a year old in 1910 when she and her mother, Mary Anne, joined her father, James Harper, in Billings. She lived at first in a sheep wagon, attended Lockwood School and Eastern Montana Normal School, then University of Washington. In 1941 she was married, and worked in Seattle, Wash., until 1945, when the Glantzes began ranching on Duck Creek, southwest of Billings. In 1959, she returned to teaching, and retired in 1974 to travel with her husband to Asia, Australia, Europe, South America and throughout the United States. Mrs. Glantz was a charter member and past president of Billings Delta Kappa Gamma teachers’ honorary, where a memorial scholarship fund has been established in her name. She was a past president of Billings Retired Teachers Association and a member of VFW Auxiliary. Survivors include her husband; three daughters; and two sisters, Mrs. Gerald (Ann) O’Donnell of 1025 Ave. C, and Mrs. Larry (Babe) Colbrese of Columbus. Services will be 1 p.m. Monday in First Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens with Michelotti-Sawyers Mortuary in charge.
