Read More	The Elgin Review, May 16, 1935: Obituary Mahalia Adams was born at Bloomington, Ill., on February 15, 1854, and passed away at her home in Elgin, Nebraska, on May 10, 1935, at the age of 81 years, 2 months and 25 days. When nine years of age, she moved with her parents to Hamilton county, Iowa, where she grew to womanhood. She was married August 25, 1872, to James Williams Woodard. To this union were born two sons and four daughters, one daughter dying in infancy, the surviving children are J.E. and A.V. Woodard, both of Elgin, Mrs. J.E. Kelly of Clearwater, and Mrs. Chris Rings and Mrs. D.J. Suhr of Elgin. In the fall of 1893 the family moved to Wheeler county, Nebraska, and located on a homestead where they resided until 1916 when they moved to Elgin, which has since been her home. Her husband preceded her in death, passing away June 23, 1917. Mrs. Woodard was a kind and loving wife and mother, whose chief interest in life was her home and family. She united with the United Brethern church in her early womanhood and continued in this faith. She leaves beside her immediate family, two sisters and ten grandchildren. Funeral services for a brother, who preceded her in death by a day, were held at the same hour as for her, at Beatrice, Nebraska. Funeral services were held from the residence on Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock, in charge of Rev. W.A. Bowden. Music was furnished by a quartet composed of Dr. and Mrs. Graham, Mrs. R.C. Huffman and A.D. Nicholas, who sang "Abide With Me," "Old Rugged Cross," and "Nearer, My God, to Thee." Mrs. Nicholas was at the organ. Pallbearers were six grandsons, Floyd and Merle Kelly, Keith and Kermit Rings, Vertus Suhr, and James Woodard. Burial was in the Cedar Valley Cemetery.
