Maynard Arnold Newhouse was born Aug. 1, 1912, in Highland Township, Winneshiek County, the son of Albert and Myrtle (Casterton) Newhouse. He graduated from the Decorah High School in 1930, from Iowa State Teachers College in 1937 with a bachelor of arts degree, and from graduate school at the University of Minnesota . Maynard was married to Bernice Meylink May 26, 1941, at the bride's home in Hull, Iowa. Seven children were born to that union. He served in World War II in the Mediterranean Theater with United States 337 Infantry Custer Division. He received a Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster. During his life Maynard served as a principal, instructor and coach at Burr Oak, 1934, Urbana, 1937-41, and Union, 1941-43, in Iowa and in Canton, Minn., from 1947-48. From 1946 until 1995, he farmed. Maynard was a member of the Burr Oak Lutheran Church, the American Legion, the V.F.W., the Silvercrest Golf & Country Club for more than 40 years, the REC Board, the Tri-Co. School Board and the Brownsville (Texas) Country Club. He was board president of NE Farm Service. In 1969, he was named an Iowa Master Farmer, recommended by E. J. Weigle. In 1970, Maynard was named Winneshiek County Outstanding Dairyman. Maynard was an avid sportsman who worked hard and played hard. Fishing, golfing, bowling, horse shoe pitching and cards filled his hours. He will long be remembered by friends, neighbors and many others who enjoy fishing at Newhouse Pond, which Maynard built in 1970. Survivors include his wife, Bernice; their seven children, Nancy Beck of Madison, Wis., Craig and Marilyn Newhouse of Decorah, Gail and Bruce Henderson of Atlantic, Faith and Dennis Johnson of Ida,Grove, Jean and Arlen Schrum of Indianola, Keith and Jane Newhouse of Rosemount, Minn., and Bruce and Barbara Newhouse of Decorah; 22 grandchildren; and one sister, Verna Simenson of Decorah.
