Maynard was born April 18, 1948, at Onawa, Iowa, the son of Earl and Mildred (Price) Melby. He was raised in the Soldier area and graduated from East Monona High School in 1966. Maynard and Kay Thompson were united in marriage on Aug. 24, 1968, at Soldier Lutheran Country Church. He was employed at Solberg Well Company in Moorhead and Farmland at Denison, Iowa. He spent the majority of his life farming until health issues slowed him down. He also owned and operated Melby's Auto Sales. He was a member of Soldier Lutheran Church, where he was baptized and confirmed, and a member of Moorhead Town Council. Maynard enjoyed playing cards, sitting on the front porch and watching his grandkids ride their bikes, restoring old tractors and his Corvette. Survivors include his wife, Kay of Moorhead; his children, Rozlynn and Tim Fundermann of Charter Oak, Iowa, Angela and Chris Ulven of Blair, Neb., Travis and Karla Melby of Moorhead and Kari and Luis Hernandez of Fort Calhoun, Neb.; eight grandchildren, Tad, Jakob and Chelsey Fundermann, Kayla, Caden and Kalli Ulven, Rebecca Melby and Carson Hernandez; his father-in-law, Duane Thompson of Ute, Iowa; and two sisters-in-law, Marcia and her husband, Fred Dumkrieger of Soldier, and Marilyn Melby of Cyprus, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister and her husband, Barb and Larry Ruffcorn; a nephew, Jason Ruffcorn; his mother-in-law, Nilmah Thompson; and a brother-in-law, Terry Melby.
