He attended Soldier Public Schools and graduated in 1933. He took music lessons and learned to play the trombone, piano, and organ. In his younger days he worked on farms and while in the harvest fields of Minnesota, he met his future wife, Margaret Eide. Maynard and Margaret were married November 14, 1940 at Watson, Minnesota. To this union were born three children, Sheldon who passed away in infancy, Larry who is married to Lynda Leeper and they have three daughters and live in Houston, Texas. Anita is married to Leo Holthaus and they have one son and two daughters and live in Lincoln, Nebraska. Maynard and Margaret worked on farms and also farmed for themselves before moving to Onawa, Iowa. In 1950 where he learned the trade of meat cutting at the Council Oak store. He followed this trade under different managements until he retired. They still reside in their own home in Onawa. SIOUX CITY JOURNAL DATED JANUARY 20, 2006: "ONAWA, Iowa -- Maynard V. Olson, 89, of Onawa died suddenly Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2006, at his residence. Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Faith Lutheran Church in Onawa. Burial will be in Soldier Lutheran Cemetery, Soldier, Iowa. There will be no visitation. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service in Onawa." OBITUARY ONAWA DEMOCRAT 25 January 2006 Maynard V Olson, 89, Onawa, Iowa died suddenly at his residence Tuesday, January 17, 2006. Maynard was born March 21, 1916 near Soldier, Iowa, the son of Tingvald Atlantis and Ella (Evenson) Olson. He was raised in the Soldier area and graduated from Soldier High School in 1933. He was a farm laborer and also harvested in the Minnesota area. He married Margaret Irene Eide November 14, 1940 at Watson, Minnesota. The couple made their home to Minnesota before moving to Soldier in 1943 where he farmed in the Soldier/Ute areas before moving to Onawa, Iowa in 1950. Maynard managed the meat market at the Council Oak Store and later Mike's IGA. He retired in 1981. Margaret passed away December 31, 2003 at Onawa. He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church and always had a special love of music. Survivors include a son and his wife, Larry and Linda Olson of Omaha, Ne.; a daughter and her husband, Anita and Leo Holthau of Lincoln, Ne.; 6 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren and a sister-in-law, Helen Nagel of Montevideo, Mn. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, an infant son, Sheldon in 1945; three brothers and a sister. Funeral services were 2:00 PM Monday, January 23, 2006 at Faith Lutheran Church at Onawa. The congregation sang "Beautiful Savior" and "What A Friend We Have In Jesus" with Mardelle Brown, organist. Burial was in Soldier Lutheran Cemetery. There was no visitation. Arrangements were under the direction of Rush Family Care Service, Onawa. Casket bearers were Brad Ashley, Bradford Ashley, Clark Ruffcorn and Herold Meyer.
