He was baptized and later confirmed on Easter Sunday, April 5, 1942 at Frieden’s Reformed Church in Tripp. As a child, he attended country school and went on to graduate from Tripp High School in 1946. On March 15, 1951, Maynard was drafted into the United States Army and served during the Korean War as a cook in the 83rd D Btry AAA Gun Bn. On March 15, 1953, he was honorably discharged with the rank of Corporal. For nearly 25 years, Maynard made his living as a farmer. On Easter Sunday, April 22, 1973, Maynard married the love of his life, Delores Bitterman and they were blessed with three children. In 1976, he began to work at CR Industries in Springfield and would continue to enjoy his work for 23 years until his retirement in 2001. In 2006, Maynard and Delores made their new home in Mitchell. Maynard was a patient, kind and loving man who had a great sense of humor. He enjoyed fishing, playing golf, and nurturing his garden and flowers. He also was a gifted singer and enjoyed singing with the church and Bon Homme choirs. For 28 years, Maynard served as a 4-H leader in the Tripp community and also went on to serve as the President of the 4-H Leaders Association. He was also a dedicated member of the Jelkin-Harms American Legion Post #142 in Tripp. He cherished spending time with his family, especially his precious grandchildren who he fondly called “his little lambs.” He was a member of Frieden’s Reformed Church in Tripp and sincerely taught Sunday school for many years. Upon moving in 2006, they attended First Reformed Church in Mitchell. Maynard was a loving husband, father, and grandfather who put God, faith, and family above all else. Maynard was lovingly embraced into Jesus’ arms on Tuesday, January 31, 2017 at Queen of Peace Hospice in Mitchell having attained the age of 88 years, 9 months, and 23 days. He is survived and remembered by his loving and dedicated wife of 43 years, Delores Schmidt of Mitchell; children: Thomas (Connie) Schmidt of Tripp, Barry (Debra) Schmidt of Menno, and Amy (Daniel) Wonnenberg of Sioux Falls; grandchildren: Abigail, Christina, Isabella, Logan, Layne, Kyndra, and Taiyah; and sister Edna Kludt of Menno. He was preceded into Heaven by his parents, Henry and Annette Schmidt; brother-in-law, Richard Kludt and father-in-law and mother-in-law, Theophil and Minnie Bitterman.
