Mayo lived all his life in the Sheyenne area, with the exception of one winter in Arizona while his mother was fighting tuberculosis. Mayo graduated from Sheyenne High School in 1941, joined the Navy in 1947, and while serving in Corpus Christie, Texas, was called home after his only sibling, Glen was killed at the age of 19. Mayo's cousin Corrine introduced him to his future wife, Lois Elaine Germundson, from Hope, ND, while she was working as a beautician in Devils Lake, and they married in Grace Lutheran Church, Sheyenne, on Oct. 9, 1948. Theirs was the first marriage conducted by Pastor Paul Gustafson, a lifetime friend. Mayo operated the family farm until his retirement in 1986 and was a lifetime member of Grace Lutheran Church. During his life of community service, he served on the Sheyenne School Board, Farmers Union Board, Grace Lutheran Church Board, and Sheyenne Town Council, and was a member of the Community Credit Union, Sheyenne Wildlife Club, Sheyenne Volunteer Firemen, and the Sheyenne 55 Club, where he enjoyed many hands of pinochle with long-time friends. In 1966 he ran for the state legislature on the Dem-NPL ticket. Mayo enjoyed reading his newspapers, fishing with his grandchildren, visiting with friends, and was a well known singer, including in Swedish, for special family, church, and community events. He was especially known for his soaring rendition of "The Lord's Prayer," which he sang at his children's and grandchildren's weddings. Mayo loved the Lord, was an avid reader of the Bible, and dedicated his life to others. He will be sorely missed by his loving family and his many friends, especially for his kindness and sense of humor. Mayo died in Altru Hospital, Grand Fords, on May 7, 2008, and is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Lois (Germundson) Swenson, his children Dean (Sandy), Sheyenne, and grandchildren Erik, Kale (Angie), and Luke (Kristin); Gail (Allan) Weisenburger, New Rockford, and grandchildren Tashia and Reed (Jenna); Ione Swenson, Grand Forks, and grandson, Connor; Neal (Liz), Sheyenne, and grandchildren Emily and Evan; Nyla (Charlie Davie), Big Sky, MT, and grandchildren Zachary and Jordan; Owen (Janet), Pembina, and grandchildren Bryden and Jadyn; great-grandchildren Kinsey and Chase Swenson and Brody Weisenburger, and special cousins Corrine McCulloch, Phyllis Ryd, and Bernice (Reynold) Lark. He was preceded in death by his mother, Signe; father, Fred; brother, Glen; mother, Agnes; and special cousin, Erling Anderson.
