Description	:	McKinzie Rose was a remarkable man in many respects, a man without schooling except in the academy of hard knocks, a militant influential Republican in the Haley's Grove and Crab Orchard sections of Cumberland county. Mr Rose was born October 24, 1824 in Roane county, was of German descent on his mother's side, his parents never having spoken a word of English. He married Elmire Phifer, daughter of Forest and Susan Philpot Phifer, born in Roane county on November 20, 1828. They were married October 18, 1846. Read More	McKinzie Rose was a remarkable man in many respects, a man without schooling except in the academy of hard knocks, a militant influential Republican in the Haley's Grove and Crab Orchard sections of Cumberland county. Mr Rose was born October 24, 1824 in Roane county, was of German descent on his mother's side, his parents never having spoken a word of English. He married Elmire Phifer, daughter of Forest and Susan Philpot Phifer, born in Roane county on November 20, 1828. They were married October 18, 1846. When the Civil War broke out, he was living in Roane county and answered Abraham Lincoln's call for volunteers, bade his wife and children adieu and enlisted in the Union Army February 20, 1862 and was honorably discharged at Nashville March 30, 1865 having served as an infantry sergeant in Captain James R Thompson's Company B, 5th Infantry. Soon after the war he moved from Roane County to Crab Orchard. He bought the farm of John M Brown on Crab Orchard mountain, cleared a large acreage and became well known as a potato grower. In the early 1890's he retired from farming, moved to Crossville and was a successful hotel operator the remainder of his active life.
