Meda Wood Blackmon Born: January 09, 1920 Died: March 29, 2016 Gaffney, SC - - Meda Wood Blackmon, 96, of 1195 Pleasant School Road, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, March 29, 2016 at Mary Black Memorial Hospital in Spartanburg. Born in Gaffney, she was the wife of Vernon O. Blackmon for 54 years and daughter of the late Landrum E. Wood, Sr. and Minnie Patrick Wood. Mrs. Blackmon was a graduate of Gaffney High School and Limestone College Class of 1941, and retired from Southern Bell in Charlotte after 40 years of service. She enjoyed traveling with her husband on bus trips and was an active member of Grassy Pond Baptist Church. Surviving in addition to her husband are three sisters-in-law, Melle P. Wood of Gaffney, Doris Mataragus and husband, Danny, and Earlene Cothren, all of Charlotte, NC; numerous nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by five sisters, Ethel W. Sarratt, Ernestine Wood, Eloise W. Sarratt, Elizabeth W. Breuer and Margaret W. McAbee, three brothers, L. E. Wood, Jr., James Wood and Smith Wood, three half-brothers, J. Baxter Wood, Dr. A. B. Wood and Lloyd Wood, and a half-sister, Marie W. Phillips. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 2:00 PM on Saturday, April 2, 2016 in the Grassy Pond Baptist Church Social Hall. Funeral services will immediately follow at 2:00 PM at the Church with Dr. Terry Lanford and Rev. Martin Hogg officiating. Interment will be in the Grassy Pond Baptist Church Cemetery. Memorials may be made to: Grassy Pond Baptist Church, 254 Grassy Pond Road, Gaffney, SC 29341. The family will be at the residence, 1195 Pleasant School Road, Gaffney.
