Melchior M Herbert, 91, last surviving soldier to serve at old Fort Sidney when it was a frontier outpost protecting civilians from marauding Indians and outlaws, died Wednesday night at Memorial Hospital. A native of Bavaria, Mr. Herbert fell in love with the west when he came to Fort Sidney to serve with the 21st Infantry as a tailor of Company G. When his honorable discharge arrived on Feb. 6, 1892, he had made up his mind where he wanted to spend the rest of his life. Taking a homestead shortly after his discharge from service, Mr. Herbert started building an empire of land holding which made him one the most successful farmers in the region. The original Herbert homestead was six miles east of Sidney, the patent being taken out in 1889. Later they moved to the Highland Ranch twelves miles southeast of Sidney where Mr. and Mrs. Herbert lived until 1927, when he retired and moved to Sidney. Mr. Herbert retained the soldierly, erect posture of a military man to his last days. He was considered an authority on the early history of the west and many of his stories as related to interviewers have appeared in the press thoughout the nation. The old fort was established in the late 1860's for the twin purposes of protecting Union Pacific construction workers and preventing marauding Indians from attaching settlers. The fort was abandoned in the 1890's when its main reason for existence ended. During Mr. Herbert's enlistment at Fort Sidney, 10,000 Indians, belonging to several tribes, went on the warpath with a vow to wipe out all of the white settlers in this territory. The 21st Infantry of Ft. D.A. Russell at Cheyenne and the 7th Cavalry were sent out to surround and disarm them. After the Battle of Wounded Knee, when Sitting Bull was killed, the Indians were subdued and sent back to the reservation. Later, in 1891, Co. G of the 21st Infantry was transferred to Fr. Randell, S.S., to relieve a company of the 7th Infantry, and it was there that Mr. Herbert received his official discharge. It was then that Mr. Herbert made up his mind to tie his future to the soil of the western frontier. He and his family endured the usual hardships of the pioneers, but stayed with the land to acquire substantial holdings, mostly along the productive south table region.
