Description	:	The Herald, April 1963 Mellia L. Mead was born March 13, 1863 in a log cabin at Boscobel, Wisconsin to Mr. and Mrs. John Gulliford. Her father was from Ohio high Dutch and her mother, Mary Francisco, was of French descent. When she was 11, the family moved to Iowa, bringing their belongings in three covered wagons. They settled about 22 miles west of Sac City, before Schaller or Odebolt was built, and three or four years before the railroads were built. Mead was born March 13, 1863 in a log cabin at Boscobel, Wisconsin to Mr. and Mrs. John Gulliford. Her father was from Ohio high Dutch and her mother, Mary Francisco, was of French descent. When she was 11, the family moved to Iowa, bringing their belongings in three covered wagons. They settled about 22 miles west of Sac City, before Schaller or Odebolt was built, and three or four years before the railroads were built. Her great-grandmother was Martha Washington's sister, Ann Ball. She remembers seeing her when she was four years old. Her father was a soldier in the Civil War serving three years, Ill health, after a sunstroke that caused near blindness, kept him in a wheelchair for 18 years. Mrs. Mead married Isaac Mead on December 30, 1879 at Odebolt. In the spring of 1880 they purchased their farm in Cook township. This place was the home of Mr. and Mrs. Mead until 1919 when they decided to turn the farm over to their son, Lester, & bought their home on East Second Street in Schaller and came to spend their declining years in comfort and a more leisurely way. Mr. Mead passed away in March of 1932. Mrs. Mead continued living their until five years ago when she sold her home and became a resident of the Schaller Rest Home, where she was cared for until her death April 29, 1963. She had reached the age of 100 years, 1 month and 16 days. Her son, Lester, pased away in 1959 and her only immediate surviving relative is her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Anna Mead. She also leaves many nieces and nephews as well as a host of friends.
