Description	:	Melvin C. "Mel" Kubicek, 72, of Denver, Iowa, died on Saturday, Sept. 13, at St John's Regional Health Center, Springfield, Mo., from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident. A celebration of life will be held Sunday, Sept. 21, from 1 to 6 p.m. at the Centennial Oaks Clubhouse, Waverly. He was born Sept. 10, 1936, in Gladbrook, the son of Edward Carl and Louise Urhammer Kubicek. He graduated from Nashua High School in 1954 and served in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1956. He married Beverly Uhlenhopp on Feb. 17, 1957, in Clarksville. He worked for Latta's Business Systems, later called Advanced Systems, and retired as CEO after 40 years of service with Advanced Systems. He was previously active in the Lion's Club, Toastmasters 101, Administrative Management Society, Iowa Office Machine Dealers' Association, National Microfilm Association, and National Association of Accountants. While active with the Waterloo Chamber of Commerce, he served as chairman of the Business Advocacy Committee and spent 13-plus years on the board at Allen Hospital, serving as chair from 1993 to 1995. He was a current member of the Quiet Birdmen and EAA Chapter 227. He introduced over 350 young people to the magic of flight. He was a private pilot and flight instructor with his certificate of instrument instruction. Mel also enjoyed riding his motorcycle and was a member of the Waterloo Harley Owners Group. Other passions included hunting, fishing and his "dabbling" in farming. Survivors include his wife, Bev, of 51 years; four daughters, Marieta (Gary) Gissel of Independence, Pamela (Mark) Avaux of Urbandale, Adele (Scott) Heilskov of Latimer and Tricia (Paul) Parizek of West Des Moines; a son, David (Dawn) Kubicek of Fort Collins, Colo.; 14 grandchildren; and two stepgreat-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters, Grace Hollen of West Des Moines and Helen Debner of Allison. He was preceded in death by his parents and one daughter, Cynthia Lou Kubicek. The Celebration of Life will include greeting friends and family from 1 to 4 p.m. with a flyover and military honors at 4 p.m. followed by a "Tribute to Mel."
