Services were Thursday at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church in Omaha. Burial of cremains will be later at Immaculate Conception Cemetery in Elm Creek. Roeder Mortuary 108th Street Chapel in Omaha was in charge of arrangements. He was born March 15, 1931, on a farm near Elm Creek to Edward J. and Ida A. (Plischke) Buettner. On June 16, 1951, he married F. Lavonne Northrup in Elm Creek. Survivors include his wife of 61 years; children, Daniel, Kristy Scott and her husband, Dale, and James, and Patricia Breiner and her husband, Mike; 9 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; sister, Eileen Smith and her husband, Ronald; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends. He died after battling myriad health problems and never complaining or questioning God's plan for him. He and Lavonne were married at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Elm Creek. Melvin attended school in Elm Creek and graduated with the class of 1949. He then went to Railroad School in Omaha. The family lived in Elm Creek, where he was employed by Union Pacific Railroad for 37 years. He served stations in Scotia and between Kearney and Gothenburg and later transferred to Millard, where the family moved. He then accepted a position in management and he and Lavonne moved to St. Louis. He retired there and they moved back to Omaha to be near family. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, a Eucharistic minister and usher at St. Leo's Catholic Church and a volunteer at Bergan Mercy Hospital for 24 years. He had been a baseball coach and a Boy Scout leader. He loved watching his kids' and grandkids' sporting events and fishing. He learned to play golf after retirement. He enjoyed his family and was a friend to everyone he met. He always looked forward to family gatherings and was a member of the Union Pacific Oldtimers Club and was a member of the Elm Creek Volunteer Fire Department for more than 20 years. Melvin was an example of a man of good, honest character, a loving heart and a great sense of humor. He will be missed by all who were blessed to know him. He was preceded in death by his parents and his nieces, Rhonda Maas and Marcia and Gloria Smith. Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association or St. Leo the Great Catholic Church in Omaha. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
