He attended Immanuel Lutheran Church Country School rural Wakefield and graduated from Wayne High School. He served in the United States Army Infantry from 1945 to 1946, and he was a proud member of the Army Band. Mel married Dorothy Ahlvers April 14, 1946, in Wayne. The couple farmed north of Wakefield for several years until moving to Colorado Springs, CO in 1958. While in Colorado, Mel worked in construction. In 1995, Mel and Dorothy moved back to the family farm north of Wayne where he continued to live until his death. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Main Street Wayne Committee; an Elderfest volunteer, and delivered meals on wheels. Melvin is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Connie and Fred Fletemeyer of Monument, CO, Carol and Jerry Doan of Colorado Springs, CO, and Karen and Bob Eaks of Scottsdale, AZ; and son, Fred Meyer of Denver, CO; eight grandchildren; and 13 great grandchildren; special friend, Lucille Williams of Laurel. Melvin was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Clara (Echtenkamp) Meyer; wife, Dorothy in 2004; one grandson, Nicholas Meyer; and a sister, Elna (Harvey) Splittgerber. He passed away Thursday.
