Baker, whose birth occurred in Eldora, Hardin county, Iowa, September 22, 1877, the son of a well known pioneer family there, the house where he was born having been third to be erected in that county, and it still remains. There he grew to manhood and attended the public schools, graduating from the high school at Eldora. Choosing pharmacy as his life work, he took and completed the course at the State University of Iowa, later attending the medical department of Northwestern University at Chicago, but did not complete. He is a registered pharmacist and was employed in a number of places until he came to Rhodes in 1906 and entered the drug business, where he has since remained and has built up a very satisfactory business. John S. Baker, father of the subject, was born in Ohio, in October, 1838, and he is now residing in Eldora, whither he came in the spring of 1866, since which time he has been a continuous resident here. He married Alice Madden, who was born in Pennsylvania, December 22, 1853, and who came to Hardin county, Iowa, in 1866. John S. Baker is one of the honored veterans of the Civil war, having enlisted in the Union army at Rockford, Illinois, in the Seventy-fourth Illinois Volunteer Infantry, and he served during the remainder of the war in a most faithful and gallant manner. His family consisted of three sons and five daughters, Melvin F., of this review, being the oldest; Mrs. Lillian Ethridge was born April 8, 1879, and lives at Iowa Falls; John S. was born June 8, 1880, and lives at Eldora ; Mrs. Mary Ellen Whiting, born January 31, 1882, lives in Hardin county; Charles Clayton, born September 22, 1883, lives in Hardin county; Alice V., born February 14, 1885, is at home in Hardin county; Jessie L., born April 7, 1886, is teaching school in Hardin county; Fleda, born August 3, 1894, is attending high school at Eldora. Melvin F. Baker was married on December 14, 1904, to Grace Darling Bartine, who was born near St. Anthony, Liberty township, Marshall county, June 10, 1884, the daughter of Amos A. Bartine, who was born in Bucks county, Pennsylvania, January 20, 1834, and he and his wife are now living near St. Anthony. He came to Iowa about June 1, 1855, and secured eighty acres of land in Lincoln township, Story county, later moving to Marshall county, where he has continued to reside. He came overland from his eastern home and has lived to see and take part in the great development of this country during the past half century. He married Lovina A. Vandeventer, who was born in Lafayette county, Wisconsin, November 26, 1847, and she and Mr. Bartine were married December 25, 1865. He enlisted for service in the Union army at Marshalltown, August 11, 1861, in Company B, Second Iowa Cavalry, and served four years and two months, receiving an honorable discharge October 4, 1865, having served under Colonels Elliott, Hatch, Coon and Horton. He saw much hard service and acquitted himself as a brave soldier through it all. He is at present commandant of the Soldiers' Home at Marshalltown. He was with Generals Sherman and Rosecrans in the Army of Western Tennessee, and was at the siege of Corinth, battle of Iuka and the several skirmishes of many campaigns. There were seven children in his family, namely: Dr. William Wesley, born October 20, 1866, lives in Seattle, Washington; Charles Willett, a prominent attorney at Pierre, South Dakota, was born April 26, 1868; Hon. John G., who served in the state Legislature as representative from Lyman county, was elected state senator in the fall of 1910; Edwin Amos is a successful merchant at St. Anthony, and he was born September 1, 1874; Blanche Marion, born November 4, 1878, is teaching school in Marshall county; Cyrus Russell, born May 22, 1880, lives near St. Anthony on the home farm; Grace Darling, wife of Mr. Baker of this review. All these children were born and reared on the same farm and all are well educated, having passed through the local schools and attended the Iowa State Normal, the two eldest graduating from that institution. Their father was engaged in teaching school for a number of years, and all the children, except the two youngest, have been engaged in the same line of endeavor. Two daughters and one son have been born to Mr. and Mrs. Baker, namely: Helen Grace, born December 24, 1905; Robert Elon, born July 16, 1907; Miriam, born December 9, 1909. Politically, Mr. Baker is independent, and he has been closely identified with every project in which the public would be interested. Fraternally, he is a member of Montague Lodge No. 117, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, of Eldora, and Chapter No. 55, Royal Arch Masons, of the same place. Mrs. Baker belongs to Crystal Chapter No. 11, Order of the Eastern Star, at Rhodes, and she is a member of the Methodist Episcopal church at Rhodes.
