Description	:	Melvin Fred Kagele passed away peacefully December 29, 2010 following complications from leukemia. He was born in Ruff, WA on November 12, 1930 to Fred & Amelia (Schmauder) Kagele. Melvin was raised in Ruff on the family farm and attended the Kagele School until 3rd grade. Read More	Melvin Fred Kagele passed away peacefully December 29, 2010 following complications from leukemia. He was born in Ruff, WA on November 12, 1930 to Fred & Amelia (Schmauder) Kagele. Melvin was raised in Ruff on the family farm and attended the Kagele School until 3rd grade. His family farmed at what is now known as Kagele Ville until 1945 when they moved to the current farm located 8½ miles west of Ritzville. Melvin attended Ritzville High School and graduated in 1948. Upon graduation Melvin continued to farm until he was drafted into the Army in 1952 serving in the Korean Conflict as a company clerk. He was chosen for this position due to Fred’s illness and dispatched later than the rest of his unit. Melvin was released from military duty in December of 1954 and discharged in 1960. He returned home to the family farm and three days later met his future wife, Erna Pein. Melvin and Erna were married September 12, 1954 at the Menno Mennonite Church. They settled on the family farm and welcomed four children. Melvin served on the Washington State Farm Bureau, was a member of the Washington Association of Wheat Growers, Fraternal Order of Eagles, C.J Newland Memorial American Legion Hall, Ritzville Rodeo Association, 4-H leader, life member of Menno Mennonite Church and most recently completed 27 years of service on the board of Big Bend Electric Cooperative where he served as President and State President. Melvin upgraded his farming operation in 1975 by drilling a deep-well irrigation system. The children have many fond memories of end-moving trimatics, changing wheel lines and moving mainline until circles were installed. Melvin and Erna were ardent supporters of their children and grandchildren and attended many sporting events, fairs, rodeos, parades and FFA national events. They were strong supporters of all kids involved in activities and cheered everyone to victory. They were familiar figures in every gym in nearby towns. Melvin is survived by his wife of 56 years, Erna, and their four children: Don Kagele, Connie Phillips, Bev Kulm (Darrel) and Jullie Cain (Emmitt), as well as seven grandchildren: Jill & Laura Cain, Ian & Shelby Youngren, Dusty Kulm, and Kylie & Rory Phillips. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Jerry Kagele.
