There will also be visitation for one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday. Melvin was born Jan. 25, 1926, to Emil and Emma (Gramm) Jung on a farm near Hosmer. He was raised on the farm and attended rural school. Following his schooling he worked on the family farm until being called to active duty with the U.S. Army in 1945. Melvin served our country until returning home in December of 1946. He returned to Hosmer and worked on his parents' farm. During this time he acquired a farm nine miles east of Hosmer. Melvin married Lorina Gutjahr on March 22, 1948, at the Congregational Church in Hosmer. They made their home on his farm and continued to work the farm, while raising their family. During their time there, he was active as a member of the township board, the Hosmer School Board and the St. John's Lutheran Church Council. They retired from farming in 1985. They eventually moved to Aberdeen where Melvin remained active as a handyman and carpenter, doing everything from small jobs to building garages. He was a true Mr. Fix-It and had always been referred to as "The Chief" by his brothers as they all brought things for him to fix. When he wasn't busy with carpentry and odd jobs, he volunteered his time and efforts to several organizations. In his spare time he enjoyed fishing, playing cards, yard work, and spending time with his family. He was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Aberdeen and a former member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Hosmer. Melvin died July 5, 2006, at Avera St. Luke's Hospital in Aberdeen. Thankful for having shared in his life are Lorina of Aberdeen; his children and grandchildren, Phyllis (Vern) Berti-Anderson and their children Lori, Toni, Tina and Pam of Denver, Colo., Leslie (Kathleen) Jung and their children Lindsey, Landon and Cortlynn of Aberdeen, Darlene (LaDell) Lehr and their children Chastity and Corey of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Stan (Kari) Jung and their children Briana and Alyssa of Aberdeen, and Steven (Brenda) Jung and their children Mandi and Megan of Rapid City; four brothers, Alton (Ramona) Jung, Leo (Lorraine) Jung and LeRoy (Peggy) Jung, all of Roscoe, and Benjamin (Betty) Jung of Aberdeen; eight great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. His parents and two infant brothers preceded him in death. Melvin's grandchildren will serve as his casket bearers. Published in the Aberdeen News on 7/9/2006.
