Description	:	Melvin L. Brooks, 82, of Mineral, Ohio, passed away Thursday June 28, 2018, at Logan Health Care. Born November 9, 1935, in Mineral, where he lived his entire life, he was the son of the late Ira Emmett and Grace Mae (Clark) Brooks. Melvin was a proud and devoted family provider. Brooks, 82, of Mineral, Ohio, passed away Thursday June 28, 2018, at Logan Health Care. Born November 9, 1935, in Mineral, where he lived his entire life, he was the son of the late Ira Emmett and Grace Mae (Clark) Brooks. Melvin was a proud and devoted family provider. He was a local historian and geneology expert as well as an accomplished photographer. He loved photography, shooting many weddings in addition to local wildlife and historical sites. He excelled at photo preservation, generously sharing his vast knowledge and photo collections with a variety of area agencies and individuals. He loved visiting area cemeteries and gathering background information on local families. He was also very interested in the local area railroad and mining industries as it pertained to the early settling of the area by his ancestors. He was an avid outdoorsman and hunter, enjoyed sailing his boat at Lake Hope and was a lifetime member of the NRA and an expert marksman and firearms instructor. Melvin retired in 1989 after 37 years as a pressman from Lawhead Press in Athens. He also retired after serving 30 years as an auxillary officer for both the Athens City Police Department and the Athens County Sheriffs Office. He also served many years as a volunteer firefighter and Fire Chief of the Waterloo Volunteer Fire Department. He retired from the Septa Correctional Facility where he worked as a Correction Supervisor, being part of the opening staff of that facility. Melvin was a member of the Mineral Methodist Church, the Isaac Walton League/Athens Fish and Game Club as well as the American Legion in Athens. Melvin, was a very opinionated man and managed to express those opinions quite easily and frequently. He loved to share his knowledge with others and was always ready with a story or anecdote. He was a very patriotic man and emphatic about the safety and security of not only his loved ones but those of the community. He loved listening to bluegrass music and was the biggest fan of the local group, The Rarely Herd, of which both his son in law, Jeff Weaver and nephew, Dan Brooks were members. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Ruth McKee Brooks, daughters Karen and Jeff Weaver and Marla Verity both of New Marshfield. Grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Matthew and Taylor Weaver (Ivy Lee), Lisa Brooks (Ryland), Joshua Verity, Rebekah and Marc Setzer (Emmalee & Annalyn), Katherine and Ryan Elliott (Rylee), Jacob Weaver and Jessica and Ronn Williams (Leila) of Florida. He is also survived by two special nephews, Dan and David Brooks and several other nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by siblings Bill Brooks and his wife Wanda, Leatha Brooks, Redda Brooks and Harold Brooks. Services will be Tuesday at 2pm at Bigony-Jordan Funeral Home in Albany with Dr. Walt Goble officiating. Burial will be in New Marshfield Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday 5-8pm and one hour prior to services on Tuesday.
