Melvin Leroy Hughes was born on September 17, 1931 at Lacey, Iowa. He was the son of John Allen and Beulah Love Heitsman Hughes. He attended school in Lacey until the 8th grade. He worked as a memchanic at the Chevy dealership in New Sharon and as a custodian at the New Sharon High School for years. Melvin enjoyed visiting Branson and garage sales with friends. He also enjoyed riding horses, visiting with friends and family and eating double cheese burgers at McDonald's. He will always be remembered as a kind hearted and caring person. He is proceeded in death by his parents and his two sisters Dora Craver and LaVadea Dickerson. Melvin is survived by several great nieces and nephews. Graveside services will begin at 11 am Monday, April 1, 2013 at the Woods Cemetery near Lacey. Visitation will be held Monday at 9 am until 10:45 am at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home in New Sharon. Memorials may be made to Stephen Memorial Animal Shelter Oskaloosa, IA.
