A day of work is done, a day of rest begun. Born in Camperdown, he was a son of the late Fred S. and Jennie B. (Stewart) Naugler. As a lifetime farmer, Mel grew vegetables and Christmas trees, raised cattle and hogs, and produced milk; for many years he operated a milk and produce delivery business. Mel was active in the Federation of Agriculture and Farmers Co-op. For 25 years Mel drove a school bus and is remembered by many primary students for helping them reach the first step of the bus. Mel and his wife, Lettie, drove rural mail, enjoying the people they served. Mel was an active member of Calvary Lutheran Church, Middlewood, served as church counselor and was a representative on the Executive Council of the Lunenburg County Lutheran Team Ministry for many years. Mel was a founding member of Italy Cross Middlewood Fire Department. He and Lettie conducted Friday night card parties for many years, raising funds for the fire department. To the end he loved a good game of 45's. Melvin is survived by his children, Victor (Ann), Italy Cross; Winfred (Janis), Port Williams; Deborah (Gerald) Black, Camperdown; brother, John (Ruth), Hebb's Cross; sister, Barbara Eisener, Italy Cross; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. Melvin was predeceased by his beloved wife of 64 years, Lettie Barbara Eleanor (Crouse) Wile; brothers, Henry, Elihu, Murrya, Uriah; sister, Kathleen. Visitation will be 6:30-8:30 p.m. Sunday, September 3, in R.A. Corkum Funeral Home, Wileville. Rev. Willis Ott will officiate at the funeral service to be held Monday, September 4, at 11 a.m. in Calvary Lutheran Church, Middlewood. Burial in the church cemetery. Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to the Italy Cross Middlewood Fire Department Building Fund. A reception in Mel's honour will be held at the Italy Cross Fire Hall following the committal.
