Melvin was born on June 24, 1928, in Marshall County to Alfred and Agnes (Keintz) Opitz. He was raised with two brothers, Norbert and Luvern and four sisters: Fidelis, Abigail, Mary Ann and Delores. On October 13, 1956 he married Rosa Lee Jaspers. He was a lifelong farmer on the Opitz homestead. He worked well with his hands - on the land, in his woodshop, cuddling babies and caring for his family. He was a soft spoken man with a dry wit. We all knew that if Grandpa couldn’t fix it —no one could. Each grandchild held a special spot in his heart; he loved hearing about their interests and accomplishments. He is survived by his family: wife, Rosa Lee Opitz; daughter Rose Ann and Jim Nagel and their family: Adam Nagel, Paul Nagel, Sarah and Seth McGill and Isaac & Jacob, Alex and Elizabeth Nagel and Maria, Beth Nagel; daughter Donna and Dan Miller and their family: Jessie and Matt Volkers, Calvin, Griffin, Marin and Eden, Ben and Larissa Miller and Avery, Sawyer and Emery; daughter Felicia and Kenny Awe and their family: Kaitlin and David Feist; daughter Claudette Opitz and Randy Kurkowski. He was proceeded in death by his daughter, Rita Opitz, an infant granddaughter Danielle.
