Description	:	Melvin Oscar Benson, 86, of Severna Park, Maryland, died after an extended illness, on December 20, 2010 at Lorien Rehabilitatilon Center, Mt. Airy, Maryland. Mel was born June 3, 1924, in Lightfoot, Virginia, to the late Alfred and Nellie Benson. He graduated in June of 1941 from Toano High School, Toano, Virginia. Mel served a tour of duty July 6, 1944 to May 1946 with the U. S. Navy (WWII) when he was drafted. He was employed by the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad in 1942, which later merged with the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, and later became The Chessie System, the latter requiring his move to Baltimore, Maryland, where he retired on July 31, 1984. Melvin was an avid golfer, computer enthusiast, and devoted member of Our Shepherd Lutheran Church. Mel was beloved by his family - his wife, Mary Vesta Benson; his son Stephen and his wife, Donna, and their four sons, Peter, Adam, Jeremy, and Benjamin of Eldersberg, Maryland; his son Eric and his wife, Kimberly, of Friendship, Maryland; his brother, David of New Bern, North Carolina; his sister, Doris Wildenberger and her husband, Bruce, of Norge, Virginia; and numerous nieces and nephews.
