Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 18, at Church of the Ascension, Bismarck, followed by a short military ceremony and lunch in the Education Center. Mel was born in Dickinson on Aug. 12, 1950, to Joseph and Barbara (Berger) Wehri. He was raised and attended school in the Haymarsh Community about 15 miles north of Glen Ullin and graduated from Glen Ullin High School in 1968. He was drafted into the Army and served on the DMZ in Korea for 13 months. After returning home, he started working for Twin City Implement where he worked for 37 years. He married his high school sweetheart, Eileen Pfennig, on June 3, 1972. They had two children, Karen and Michael. Mel and Eileen enjoyed traveling and went to places like the Bahamas, Hawaii, New Zealand, Australia, Alaska and many places across the U.S. Mel's hobbies included gardening, helping on the farm, bowling, slowpitch softball, horseshoe pitching but especially hunting. His most valued hunting times were hunting pheasant and deer with his son, Mike, and getting a big horn sheep with his son-in-law, Wes, in the Badlands and most recently he got his once-in-a-lifetime elk in North Dakota. He enjoyed talking of those hunts and the fun they had. His dog, Tate, was always at his side. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. He taught by calm but firm and confident example. He loved his family and they loved him dearly. He was liked by all and was a natural peacemaker. He is survived by his wife Eileen; two children, Karen (Wes) Schmidt and their daughters, Katelyn and Cassidy, and Mike (Mindy Hurst) and their daughters, Madison and Emily; 10 siblings, Paul, Harvey (Carol), Linus (Kathy), Janice (Leonard) Doll, Lois (Bob) Geck, Bernard (Eileen), Virgil (RaDeanna), Irvin (Karen), Leo and Ray (Janet); his mother- and father-in-law, Elsie and Godfred Pfennig; two brothers-in-law, Larry (Deb) Pfennig and Lee (Tammy) Pfennig; many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and -nephews. He was preceded in death by his grandparents; his parents; an infant sister, Pauline; and two infant grandsons, Wyatt and Carter. During Mel's illness, he received an enormous amount of love from our family, friends and neighbors. We want to thank all who helped in so many ways.
