Description	:	Melvin Schmeichel, age 90, was born on May 28, 1929 in Freeman, S.D. to Christian and Mary (Hofer) Schmeichel. He passed into heaven on March 7, 2020 after just a few days on hospice. Dad grew up as part of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Freeman, but transferred his membership to Salem Mennonite (South) Church in 1963, remaining a faithful member the rest of his life. Read More	Melvin Schmeichel, age 90, was born on May 28, 1929 in Freeman, S.D. to Christian and Mary (Hofer) Schmeichel. He passed into heaven on March 7, 2020 after just a few days on hospice. Dad grew up as part of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Freeman, but transferred his membership to Salem Mennonite (South) Church in 1963, remaining a faithful member the rest of his life. Melvin graduated from St. Paul Lutheran Day School in 1944 and Freeman Academy in 1948. The highlight of his high school years was playing basketball. That interest continued later in life as he was an avid fan of the Freeman Academy Bobcats, enjoyed attending games at Freeman Public High School, and spent many evenings traveling to college games with his friends, Delbert and Clyde Kaufman. The Saturday before his fall he watched the Kansas vs. Kansas State and Kentucky vs. Xavier games with Steve. His comments as he watched them was “that those guys need to shoot the ball better from outside” and that at one time, he held the Freeman Academy scoring record at 41 points in a game. Dad married Betty Fliginger on January 27, 1952 at the Salem Mennonite Church. Two children were born to this family, Vernetta and Steve. They farmed with Betty’s father and uncle for about 20 years and then continued with son, Steve. Melvin enjoyed every aspect of farming and continued actively participating until he was 82. His favorite tractor was Allis Chalmers. Dad served as an usher at Salem Mennonite Church for a number of years. He also served on the Freeman Co-op Board, and as a Norway Township Supervisor for 12 years. Now grandson Ethan is serving in the same position. Until he became a resident at Salem Mennonite Home, he enjoyed eating out at various restaurants with family members to celebrate birthdays or just for fun. He also loved to visit with anyone that he met. The guys at Gary’s Garage became a great source of support and friendship after Melvin and Betty moved to town in 1984. After Betty died in 2001, he appreciated the friends and fellowship at Papa’s and later Meridian Corner during suppertime. Treasuring his memory are children and their spouses, Vernetta and Rodney Waltner, and Steve and Debra Schmeichel; grandchildren Kimberly (Jeff) Kliewer, Mindy (Evan) Kindt, Paula (Tom) VerDouw, Susan (Ben) Harder, and Ethan (Jessica) Schmeichel. great-grandchildren Denver, Makenna, Sutton and Brecker Kindt, Jacob, Caleb, Malachi, and Maxton Kliewer, Vail and Shay VerDouw, Roy Harder, and Colt Schmeichel; sister, Judy Walter; sisters-in-law, Ardis (Joe) Wipf and Rita F. Graber; many nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty; brother, Edwin Schmeichel; sister, Gladys Hanskutt; brothers-in-law, Kenneth Walter, Don Hanskutt, DeLayne Graber; and sister-in-law Barbara Schmeichel.
