Description	:	GLOUCESTER - Melvin Thomas Rainier, 83, passed away on Friday, July 15, 2005, in Riverside Walter Reed Hospital after a long illness. He was born in Mathews County and was the son of the late Upshur and Mary Lewis Rainier and was also preceded in death by his daughter, Cynthia Carol Rainier; his sisters, Golden Dutton, Lottie Rowe, and Ruth Robins, and his brother, Upshur Rainier. Read More	GLOUCESTER - Melvin Thomas Rainier, 83, passed away on Friday, July 15, 2005, in Riverside Walter Reed Hospital after a long illness. He was born in Mathews County and was the son of the late Upshur and Mary Lewis Rainier and was also preceded in death by his daughter, Cynthia Carol Rainier; his sisters, Golden Dutton, Lottie Rowe, and Ruth Robins, and his brother, Upshur Rainier. He retired from Pennsylvania Railroad as a barge captain. He was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church in Gloucester, Harcum Hunt Club, the Odd Fellows and Redman Lodges, and a former member of Veterans of Foreign Wars. During World War II he served in the U.S. Coast Guard in the Pacific Theater. He was an avid gardener and loved the water. He was famous in the neighborhood for sharing his vegetables and the bounty of the local waterways. He is survived by his loving wife, Jacqueline S. Rainier of Gloucester; his son M. Thomas Rainier and his wife, Mary, of Gloucester; his grandson, Corey Rainier; his sisters, Beulah R. Sadler of Halliford, Marylin Morgan of Halliford, Joyce Downs of Diggs, Janice South and Aubrey Mitchum, both of Mathews. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday, July 18, in Ebenezer Baptist Church by the Rev. Richard Ford. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home 4 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday. Memorial donations may be made to the Gloucester Volunteer Fire and Rescue, P.O.
