NELSON, Melvin Ward Melvin Ward Nelson passed away peacefully at his home in Yuma, Arizona Thursday, April 29th, 2004 with his wife of fifty years at his side. NELSON, Melvin Ward Melvin Ward Nelson passed away peacefully at his home in Yuma, Arizona Thursday, April 29th, 2004 with his wife of fifty years at his side. Mel is survived by his wife and best friend Pat, his three children Gary Nelson (Audree) of Dawson Creek, B.C., Shirley Bowen (Kurt) of St. George, Utah and Sharon Wong of Aldergrove, B.C., eight grandchildren Dean and Alison Nelson, Jenny, Will, Chad and Loni Bowen, Breanna and Chelsea Wong and two step-grandchildren Dorothy and Lorraine Wong. Mel is also survived by his brother Grant Nelson (Joyce) of Edmonton, Alberta, his sister Marie Hill (Leo) of Medicine Hat, Alberta, sister Lois Phillips of Taber, Alberta, mother-in-law Alice Shirley, sister-in-law Joan Hennig (Kelsey), brother-in-law Ed Shirley (Rhonda), all of Edmonton, brother-in-law Ken Rombough of Taber, Alberta and sister-in-law Betty Nelson of Evansburg, Alberta. Mel is also survived by many nieces and nephews who meant so much to him. Mel was born December 7, 1932 in Stirling, Alberta, Canada. He married Patricia Alice Shirley in Taber, Alberta on June 23, 1954. As their family grew, they resided in Taber, Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver where Mel owned various businesses. After retirement, Mel and Pat moved to Yuma, Arizona where Pat will continue to reside. Mel loved to travel, loved to hunt and fish and loved sports of every kind. He was always up for a party and enjoyed entertaining. He will be missed not only by his family but also by the many friends and associates he made over the years. The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and caregivers who so thoughtfully and kindly took care of Mel during his illness. We will always be grateful to Heather Butler for her special friendship and caring. A Memorial Service was held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Chapel, 2895 S. 8th Ave., Wednesday, May 5th, 2004 at 11 a.m. Another service will be held in Edmonton, Alberta at the LDS Chapel at 14010 - 74 St. on June 5 at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations would be appreciated to Hospice of Yuma, 1824 S. 8th Ave., Yuma, Arizona, 85364, or Greater Foothills Helping Hand, 11776 S. Sheryl Dr., Yuma, AZ 85367. |
